Product Description

Review

Praise for the first edition: "This publication, many years in the making, represents a masterly treatment of vascular plant groups and the principles of plant systematics as well as incorporating the latest concepts in phylogenetics and methodologies. It is erudite and most importantly - user friendly, especially students. This text will serve as the standard for many years to come." - Botanical Society of America

I've had this book a while now and the more I read it the more I love this book. Don't
be put off by the title, 'systematics' is just a modern version of classification based
upon genetic relationships between plants rather than the earlier system based upon
plants' physical similarities. This book explains why plants are the way they are and how
they came to evolve that way. It is a superb book that explains (with the aid of a lot
of excellent photographs, diagrams, drawings etc) in intricate detail the form and function
of plants. I'm sorry this is such a very short comment, please feel free to ask if you would
like to know more about this book.
Oh, I am purely an amateur botanist with no formal
training in botany beyond A levels of over 30 years ago - I just find plants fascinating.
You do don't need to be an expert to appreciate this book, you simply need to be
enthusiastic and have the ability to give a book such as this your full attention.
Treat yourself, this is a fantastic and engrossing book which has been beautifully
produced, the binding, paper and all printing is superb.

I have now spent two full months with this book, and can report that I am very impressed with it. As an early student of taxonomy and systematics I have found it to be an excellent, accessible introduction with comprehensive references to further detail as required. The language is clear and succinct. It is accessible to anyone with a basic understanding of biology at high school level. It is also well illustrated. For me the kindle version does, however, have one drawback. When viewed on an iPad4 some of the diagrams are illegible. This affects a minority of the total diagrams and is mainly limited to chapter 2. The same diagrams when viewed on a macbook pro are better and are legible, but still hard to easily read. Overall it is a good, solid, well written text book. I recommend it.

Image quality is very poor in Kindle version 6 Mar. 2014
By Justina Thorsen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I downloaded the free trial of this book. It looks like it has a lot of great information and illustrations. Unfortunately, all of the illustration images are of such poor quality that they are nearly impossible to read. Even when you click to zoom on the image, image quality remains poor. I would buy this book IF image quality of the illustrations was improved.
The book itself is fantastic! Very well done 17 Mar. 2015

The book itself is fantastic! Very well done, the information flows great.
The only problem is that the ebook is not formatted very well!! There are NO page numbers, so if you're a student (like me) who needs to read specific sections then you're out of luck.

It's a great book for students and teachers of botany and systematics. A "must have" for sure! It contains all the important orders and families of plants.

Good general information and good illustrations 26 Mar. 2013
By Luis Henrique Z. Branco - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
The book provides a broad approach to plant systematics and therefore a little superficial. It is nicely illustrated, which assist in the understanding of the topics. Recommended for beginners or more generic queries in this line.

Good coverage of the material, lots of details 2 Oct. 2013

The second edition has about 100 more pages than the first. I have found the diagrams and overall information clear and helpful. A great textbook for plant systematics.
