5.0 out of 5 stars Why has this book been out of print so long? 24 Jun 2001
Format:Hardcover
If you care about why it has become so difficult to build really beautifully then read this. Unwin is perhaps the UK's greatest master of urban design and domestic architecture in the 20th century and it's both ironic, yet wonderful, that it's taken Princeton to finally re-issue it. Taking in a broad sweep of historic town and city settlements, Unwin places the specific stresses and needs of early 20th century city planning at the forefront of his analysis, yet it's remarkable how relevant his ideas remain as ripostes to today's problems of suburban sprawl and myopic modernism. This should be essential reading for all those who dismiss Unwin and the so-called 'garden city' movement as being utopian and anti-urban. This is practical idealism in its most polished form. Don't planners read Unwin any more?

Oh...and it is beautifully written too!

If you really want this book, spring for the Princeton Architectural Press larger format hardcover
for this bargain edition the format is too small and the image quality is poorly reproduced.
