Product Description

Planning and Budgeting is one of the hottest topics in accounting; global spending on budgeting software is booming and is predicted to continue to grow throughout this decade. It's big business.

This book focuses on 'Driver-Based' budgeting (ie using external and internal non-financial drivers to predict live item expenses). The book shows the benefits that Driver-Based Budgeting brings and as such is a 'tool kit for change'. Case studies and worked examples are used throughout to ensure understanding, as well as checklists on implementation issues.

. Transform the process of implementing new budgeting software with Driver-Based Budgeting
. Shows how organisations can slash the time and cost involved in preparing their annual budget
. Accountants learn how to manage uncertainty and quickly assess the impact of both internal and external changes

4.0 out of 5 stars Response to G Mason 21 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback
From the review by G Mason, it sounds as thought working for a software is the equivalent of selling one's soul to the devil. I certainly admit to be employed by a software vendor - this fact is listed in my biography on the outer cover for all too see.
A more interesting question is exactly who does Mr Mason thinks is best placed to write a book on budgeting? Does he think it should be academics (they usually have commerical interests with private consultancy practices) or consultants, (they have definite commerical interests in earning fees). I am totally confounded by his opinion.
That this book has been published under the imprint of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants suggests it is impartial and reflects best practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars An entire book dedicated to Budgeting 22 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
I would recommend that anyone interested in implementing a new planning and budgeting application inside their organization investigate the ideas contained in this book before they approach a vendor. It sets out some simple ideas that will help you think about planning and budgeting as a seamless process and provides a straightforward guide to transforming the torment of traditional budgeting into something that adds value. Although it's an important topic, most management accounting books cover budgeting in a single chapter so it's really good that someone has dedicated an entire book to it

Barrett creates an engaging and practical "how-to" guide that should be invaluable to any finance team that wants to transition from a traditional, financially focussed budgeting to a flexible, driver-based model. The book contains a number of practical case studies as well as the theoretical foundations of driver-based budgeting, and is written with a confident realism that is refreshingly easy to follow.

I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to transform their organisation's planning and budgeting practices for the better.
