From the Author
An up to date easy read (I hope!) about solar system objectsThis is as up to date and comprehensive as I could make it. It was published on 3 July 2000, and incorporates revisions made as recently as March 2000. I intend to keep it up to date by making revisions at each reprinting. As well as including streamlined accounts of the large satellites of the outer planets derived in part from the 2nd edition of my Satellites of the Outer Planets (Oxford University Press, 1999), this book covers small satellites, asteroids, Kuiper belt objects, "Planet X", planets round other stars, and of course the Moon and the solar system's nine main planets. It was an absorbing challenge to assimilate and distill the necessary ingredients from the abundance of information in research papers, books and (in particular) the worldwide web. My first Teach Youself book, Geology, came out in 1997 has has now been translated into Spanish and Portuguese. The next one, Teach Yourself Volcanoes, may just about make it in time for Christmas 2001.
