5.0 out of 5 stars An exploration of space, dreams v reality, & doomed love, 20 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book is a unique undertaking as up and coming British author Allen Ashley successfully weaves several separate stories about the planets of the solar system into a highly intelligent, thought-provoking novel whose images will remain embedded in your brain forever! Dealing at one and the same time with themes of exploration, social control, doomed love and dreams versus reality, Ashley employs a whole arsenal of literary techniques reminiscent of the best of Kurt Vonnegut, William Burroughs and Michael Moorcock's "Jerry Cornelius" series. Although clearly schooled in scientific data about our companion planets, the author also harks back to earlier suppositions about our near neighbours. Thus, Venus is a new garden of Eden, Mars the site of an ancient nuclear war, alluring space nereids orbit Neptune and so forth. And if you're wondering about the composer Gustav Holst, well, he gets his own section detailing a fictional tour of Nazi Germay circa 1933.

This is the cult novel PAR EXCELLENCE!
