BBC Review

The Cuban-American rapper Pitbull's chart ubiquity is one of the odder turns in pop - but one that, in retrospect, makes total sense. Those for whom sample-heavy hits such as I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) and guest verses for everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Enrique Iglesias and Alexandra Burke were introductions to the man born Armando Pérez may be surprised to find that for half-a-decade prior to his international breakthrough, Pitbull had been a respected purveyor of club rap at the forefront of the crunk and reggaeton scenes - and as such, a singularly unlikely candidate for long-term mass appeal.

As pop trends moved towards the urban/electro synthesis that has dominated the past few years, though, it was perhaps inevitable that Pitbull found himself well-placed to jump on its bandwagon: his career to date had involved distilling various strains of Miami club life for a hip hop audience, and the thumping tackiness of pop's latest default sounds was merely another iteration of this. Planet Pit finds him continuing shamelessly in the same vein: never known for lyrical depth, Pitbull has long since abandoned whatever traces of subtlety he ever possessed in favour of route-one lascivious VIP braggadocio. The common currency of club rap, to be sure, but it's hard to escape the feeling that Pitbull has become lazier over the years when lyrics such as "Mami, you're the internet - and I'm lookin' for a download" and "I don't play football, but I touch down everywhere" crop up. Meanwhile, Shake Señora represents some kind of nadir of sample culture, borrowing heavily from Harry Belafonte and coming off more like a Macarena-style novelty hit as Pitbull and Sean Paul willingly reduce their 'exotic' backgrounds to stereotypes.

But Planet Pit's shamelessness also winds up being its strength. Formulaic it may be, but it is a formula Pitbull knows his way around - and though this aesthetic can't hope to match the boundless energy that the combination of his vocal with a Lil Jon production used to bring, there's enough of it here to satisfy once you turn your mind off. Pitbull is game for everything from pounding RedOne beats with Gaga-ist chants to a varied selection of post-Pon De Floor squealing synths, and like a true entertainer rarely flags. Leave it to Ne-Yo, though - a rather more delicate performer whose presence here seems rather incongruous - to provide Planet Pit's finest moment. His turn on the single Give Me Everything is thoroughly in character: the yearning ecstasy of the chorus will be familiar to anyone who's listened to chart radio in the past few years, but only Ne-Yo would cut to the sense of mortality underpinning it all: "We might not get tomorrow," he pleads. Desperately feel-good club pop as a memento mori? Of course.

As of 2011, it must be real good to be in Pitbull's shoes right now.

He's peaking even higher than he ever was, guest collaborating with so many artists, from J.Lo to Akon, and this new release, titled "Planet Pit," is simply a impressive platform to show the rest of the world that now it's his turn, and the Miami sound (a crazy mix of so many different kinds of club sounds) is to be taken seriously in the world now more than ever.

He's got an impressive mix of guest singers from the U.S. as well as around the world, too: Kelly Rowland (who is more popular in Europe than former singer/partner from Destiny's Child Beyonce Knowles could ever be), T-Pain, Marc Anthony, David Rush, Nicola Fasano (a DJ and producer formerly of Italy) and many more guests simply swirl over the force that is Pitbull. He doesn't forget where he came from and how he got there, and many of the people he is collaborating with on this album have used him in the past as a guest performer, so it's only natural to give him a bit back, and they all blend wonderfully.

(I'm reviewing the Deluxe version, which has 16 tracks instead of the regular 12 tracks on his "official" release.)

1) Mr. Worldwide (Intro) (Feat. Vein) - this is a short track, but Pitbull is telling you RIGHT now "Let's show 'em why they call me Mr. Worldwide" for a reason; the entire album is a tribute to his world appeal, and the mix of rapid-fire raps over very a danceable track is just a prelude to...

02. Give Me Everything (Feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) - this is the second released track that's already out there, and if you haven't heard it, shame on you - it flows magically down his street and right into the club!

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise!!! 26 July 2011
By Yankeeeee VINE VOICE

I heard a few tracks from this album, and thought I'd give it a go. I am not a big fan of pitbull so was not expecting anything amazing. WRONG!!!!
Been listening to this pretty much every day for the last few weeks, its a really good album which is quite varied but still flows very well.
Standout tracks:
Rain on me
Castle made of sound
Come N Go
Give Me Everything.
There are a couple of tracks I tend to skip - Shake Senora and Something for the DJ's .. the rest of the album is very very good!! Definitely recommend this

5.0 out of 5 stars Planet Pit? Outta this world!!!!!! 17 July 2011
By Jacq
Format:Audio CD
I'm actually a 46 year old female and can't get enough of Pitbull. 'Rebelution' was fantastic with my kids and their friends wondering if i had lost my mind. It wasn't until Pit had his number 1, that these 'kids' jumped on the bandwagon. I couldn't wait for Planet Pit to come out, having pre-ordered it and I was not disappointed! Of course, I didn't expect it to be anything but fab. How right I was! I absolutely love every song on this new album and would recommend it. I believe each song could be a massive hit on its own. Lots of collaborations, but undeniably Pit hits!

5.0 out of 5 stars Planet Pit 9 Mar 2012

Anyone who doesn't like this album are stiffs, amazing mix of Brazilian, rock, rap and *dirty words. (*you are warned.) Collaborating with some of the world's best and up and coming artists. Pit looks like a bouncer, who shouldn't really be doing this, he's best on a club stage in Miami, where live performances bring down the house down. Liked by both men and women, he's the man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD 16 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
During my internship this summer, one of my work colleagues bought this and we listened to it on our way to work every single day. It really got you going and motivated for the day. It is still my go-to CD while driving and while in the shower. I also think it's a really good work-out CD, as it has a really good beat and makes you work out much harder! Overall I think it is well worth buying. My favorite song is Rain Over Me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Planet of Club Gems 25 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
"Planet Pit" by Pit Bull is a well-compiled medley of high-energy dance tracks. The musical tracks on this song are definitely good for helping to increase physical energy because they have a fun party feel. Many of the collaborations on this cd are also very good. My favorite musical track on this cd is "Took My Love". "Took On Love" is about the ability of a woman to be enchanting. "Planet Pitt" by Pitt Bull is best to get if you enjoy fun dance/electronica club music that you can play to raise your mood and/or at a public forum such as a party.
