As of 2011, it must be real good to be in Pitbull's shoes right now.
He's peaking even higher than he ever was, guest collaborating with so many artists, from J.Lo to Akon, and this new release, titled "Planet Pit," is simply a impressive platform to show the rest of the world that now it's his turn, and the Miami sound (a crazy mix of so many different kinds of club sounds) is to be taken seriously in the world now more than ever.
He's got an impressive mix of guest singers from the U.S. as well as around the world, too: Kelly Rowland (who is more popular in Europe than former singer/partner from Destiny's Child Beyonce Knowles could ever be), T-Pain, Marc Anthony, David Rush, Nicola Fasano (a DJ and producer formerly of Italy) and many more guests simply swirl over the force that is Pitbull. He doesn't forget where he came from and how he got there, and many of the people he is collaborating with on this album have used him in the past as a guest performer, so it's only natural to give him a bit back, and they all blend wonderfully.
(I'm reviewing the Deluxe version, which has 16 tracks instead of the regular 12 tracks on his "official" release.)
1) Mr. Worldwide (Intro) (Feat. Vein) - this is a short track, but Pitbull is telling you RIGHT now "Let's show 'em why they call me Mr. Worldwide" for a reason; the entire album is a tribute to his world appeal, and the mix of rapid-fire raps over very a danceable track is just a prelude to...
02. Give Me Everything (Feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) - this is the second released track that's already out there, and if you haven't heard it, shame on you - it flows magically down his street and right into the club! Afrojack is a DJ from the Netherlands and singer Nayer perfectly compliment Ne-Yo's calls for just having fun... and what's wrong with that?
03. Rain Over Me (Feat. Marc Anthony) - once again, the dance tracks keep on flowing, this is the third single released before this album dropped, and Marc Anthony's magical light falsetto float over the song, giving it the right mix of soft and hard as Pitbull's hardness never lets go.
04. Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor) (Feat. T-Pain) - this is the historic first single, released back in late 2010, and has been everywhere, and has been performed everywhere, too! Yes, Autotune as a form of 'singing' is dying, but for T-Pain it works here, as the raggaeton beats jump up and move the listener, and then Pitbull jumps in and says it's my turn, too. I think they even borrow a line from Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It," with it's baby baby baby. This is already a great dance track, and it works for me.
05. Pause - I'm just waiting to someone to create an actual club dance for this track, because it has all the ingredients to make it work - quick beats, quick vocals, and then a moment of silence, just enough for someone to make it work on the dance floor...
06. Come N Go (Feat. Enrique Iglesias) - There is no subtlety here, as it's as subtle as a sledgehammer, but it's like this - Pitbull knows what he wants to do and he knows what to do and how to do it. Plain and simple. Play this tonight when you're in one of those crazy moods!
07. Shake Senora (Feat. T-Pain & Sean Paul) - In this remake/remix of "Jump In The Line (Shake Senora)" by Harry Bellafonte, it goes everywhere and is crazy crazy crazy! Give this a spin when you want to make the crowd scratch their heads as the breaks make you pause mid-dance and yet still move on the floor.
08. International Love (Feat. Chris Brown) - Could it be Chris Brown isn't over? This was the first release thrown out there in late May 2011, and instantly became a Top 100 on the Billboard chart, so maybe Chris still can be a top seller. Pitbull uses his voice as the chorus tells you that even though he's been to every big city in the world and seen some of the most beautiful women in the world, Pitbull is still in love with you, and you've got it better than every pretty girl he's ever seen out there - a love song for 2011? It's possible... it's possible!
09. Castle Made Of Sound (Feat. Kelly Rowland & Jamie Drastik) - I have always loved Kelly Roland's voice, even after Beyonce decided to become Diana Ross and dump her own version of The Supremes. But, Kelly realized singing in Europe can still make you even more famous than you ever were - and make you a lot of money. (So there, Beyonce!) Here she's paired with Caucasian-American rapper Jamie Drastik, who hails from the New York area, and he raps about NYC, blah blah blah. I actually don't like this track too much, and to be honest, I really don't know what it's about (a declaration of love, a confession of crimes?), but Kelly's voice rises above this mess and for me keeps it worth listening to, if only for her. That's about it.
10. Took My Love (Feat. Red Foo, Vein & David Rush) - Enough of the sappy ballads, which I'll be honest, turned me off to the album for a few minutes. Thank goodness this track brought me back! L.A. based Red Foo, Miami (by way of NYC) rapper Vein and hip-hop rapper David Rush (also known as Young Bo$$) all take turns wit Pitbull letting us know she jacked our hearts! All this to a great fast wonderful beat, too! One of the more fun tracks for me!
11. Where Do We Go (Feat. Jamie Foxx) - Jamie Foxx, still trying pretty hard to be a guest singer on every album recently to let everyone know he still exists, bangs on the chorus as Pitbull tells us he's done a lot of it all so far, but what's left to conquer musically? I don't know, but with this track he's pretty much got it figured out for me, and I'd follow him anywhere.
12. Something For The DJ's (the last track on the regular album) - a straightforward dance track, and a cub mover. Throw this on in the club and they'll be jumping quick and clapping along with the nonsensical lyrics and the wonderful beats here. But the album's not really over, as he tells' the DJ to go go go, cut, scratch, and use this track to break it into any other track out there, and it will work! And just as quickly as the album started, the album ends here, fading into a planet occupied by Pitbull and the endless world of beats he's created...
(Now here's the 4 bonus tracks for the Deluxe Version)
13. Mr. Right Now (Feat. Akon) - this bonus track, as soon as it's released as a single, will be his next hit. Guaranteed! This is a great smooth song, with great summer beats, and may sound a little like a lot of the music designed to make the young kids move, but this track will get them on the floor, or rolling along in the car. I HOPE SOMEONE OUT THERE IS LISTENING - RELEASE THIS TRACK AS A SINGLE!
14. Shake Senora Remix (Feat. T-Pain, Sean Paul & Ludacris) - It's basically the same song as the original track, but with more vocals, this time provided by self-made gazillionaire rapper Ludacris and very much still a fun track worth listening to.
15. Oye Baby (Feat. Nicola Fasano) - Italian DJ & singer Nicola Fasano takes the song to an other level with his smooth vocals totally complimenting Pitbull's singing and music. No wonder, as they're both currently residents of Miami and have worked together for over 5 years at one point or another. This track has great a great beat and moves great as well.
16. My Kinda Girl (Feat. Nelly) - A final love song, maybe, with the kind of buildup that some cheesy 1980's songs did, but this song has a 21st Century life all it's own, especially when the lryics "'cause every n*gga in here want you" come along, the song kind distances itself pretty quickly from the kinda corniness of Prince or even Adam Ant's 'ooh baby baby' style.
So, that's it. I give the album 5 stars.
I have to, as I have to admit that ALMOST every song on the album is worthy of a Top 100 and even one ("Mr. Right Now") can and could hit Number One, if they release it as a single.
In summation, the album is fun, young, hot and once it hits the clubs anywhere in the world will make the youth of the world get up and dance to Pitbull. He's got one goal here, to dominate the world's clubs, radios and Mp3 players with his sound. With this album, he's got a really good shot at it. It's THE perfect summer album of 2011 that everyone will get their hands on, because the sound is very much now, the featured artists complimented him perfectly, and the beats are flavored with that Miami area code 305 combination of Raggaeton, dance hall and Cuban salsa, all mixed over and in it. It's a winner - almost - from the first track to the last. This album will put Pitbull on the map as one of the leading international hip-hop artists to date.
Please note: an American Pitbull dog has jaws of steel, and once they clamp down on something, you have to almost kill them to get them to let go of what they want. It's not called "Planet Pit" without a reason - it's his musical world, it's his time, and he's taking a bite of the world music theater - and we're just going to have to settle for him being everywhere from now on, dancing along to his beat - and me? I'm all for it. Pick up a copy today and see for yourself!
