Book Description

17 Oct 2012 Planet Phonics Books
The Planet Phonics reading system has been devised by experts - and successfully field-tested - to appeal to pre-school and reception-age children, their parents and their grannies. We hope our simple knitting patterns and straightforward knitting know-how section will tempt people to get together and have a go at this traditional, yet increasingly popular craft - and perhaps knit some Planet Phonics characters for their local school or playgroup. Planet Phonics Kniteracy features 21 cute knitted characters, each representing the 21 consonants of the English alphabet, and five similarly tactile vowel "planets". The vowels are different from the rest of knitted characters in a bid to help children appreciate their role and vital importance to all words. Every letter has its own story, action, rhyme and easy-to-use knitting pattern. Planet Phonics characters are cuddly, durable, washable and rather old fashioned. They're also irresistibly appealing to children and adults alike. Planet Phonics Kniteracy is also a potential springboard for an inter-generational community project between experienced knitters - including, perhaps, isolated older people - and numerous potential knitting groups at schools, nurseries and community halls.

"Thanks to Planet Phonics my seven-year-old son who's dyslexic at last knows his alphabet and can actually sound out words. And with the soft, cuddly characters, learning becomes a game." Fiona Wheeler, mother

About the Author

Debbie Long was born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex but moved to Brighton in 1970 to train as a teacher. After graduating, Debbie worked in primary schools in Brighton. She specialised in special needs teaching, helping children who found reading and writing difficult. This is where her interest in developing strategies to help children who were struggling to pick up the phonics needed to decode words began. Two of her children were dyslexic so her training in dyslexic type problems was particularly important to her. She worked alongside specialist dyslexic teachers, speech therapists and educational psychologists. Debbie had helped knit the characters for her daughter Laura Long's book 'Toy Tales', when she realised the knitted toy's potential for making the teaching of phonics fun and multi-sensory. With her experienced teacher friend Jill Hassan, Debbie came up with the characters, actions, rhymes, stories, songs, reading books and games that make up Planet Phonics. The children that Debbie taught often had trouble realising the importance of vowels in words. This is why the vowels in Planet Phonics are the planets and are different from every other sound in the phonic alphabet. The consonants are knitted animals or people. 'Planet Phonics Kniteracy' is the first of a series of books designed to help children learn the sounds necessary to read and write.

A fantastic idea for amusing and educating the young ones. If the parents are busy, then the grandparents can take over assuming they can "knit a bit" and it'll keep the little ones amused for hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun to knit and great to play with 7 Nov 2012
This is a knitting book, with patterns to make characters and planets which make up all the letters of the alphabet. They are then an excellent resource for helping children learn to read. They have been highly successful in the schools where they have been used. My son loves playing the games that go with the toys and it was a fun way to help him learn his letters.
