A Beautiful and Strange Journey 18 Oct 2001

Planet of the Apes has written it's golden name in history thanks to the excellent film that was made in 1968. Nevertheless, the original novel is a little gem that has high value by itself.
Pierre Boulle wrote this book more as a fable than a Science Fiction novel. He wanted to comment on many aspects of society's present (and possible future) by constructing an upside-down world.
Thus, while Planet of the Apes is very original and amusing, it is mostly an intense social essay full of wit. It is a novel to make you think while you are being entertained. What else could we ask for?.

Very different from the film (s) - and far superior. Read it years and years ago so it was nice to re-read it recently (after seeing the recent Tim Burton film based on the themes of the book) and it was just as magical as I remembered it. The Monkey Planet is a totally recommended book.

A Great and Brief Read 7 Dec 2011

This story is on some levels random sillyness, but at the same time a gripping read.
In some ways its also a reality check. We're faced with the concept of humans treated the way we treat our great apes in the labs and the like, and we're faced with just how intelligent and capable these beings we class along with 'animals' are.
Unfortunately i had seen the films and had the 'twist' blown for me, but someone unaware of this book might possibly maybe be intrigued and enthralled at the turn of events!
Anyway, given that i obviously can't be bothered to write a proper review, its a good read and one that deserves your attention. It's only 200 pages long and won't take too much of your time, should you dislike it.

Gulliver's Travels rebooted!

A decent science fiction story, but essentially a retelling of 'Part IV: A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms' from Gulliver's Travels.
Swift does it better though!

Well worth a read

An interesting read. The main narrative takes place as a story recounted in a message in a bottle, topped and tailed with an overarching storyline with a fairly predictable twist. Read more
