Amazon.com Review

Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can't quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you've heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates ("Future events such as these will affect you in the future!") as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have "NOT BELA LUGOSI" stamped on his forehead. Plan 9 is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it's impossible not to love it. And if you don't, well, as Eros says, "You people of Earth are idiots!" --Ali Davis

Product Description

This is it! The most phenomenally popular cult classic ever in the entire history of motion pictures! The double Golden Turkey Award winner - worst picture and worst director, this legendary film was written, directed and produced by Edward D.Wood Jr. Some films that achieve legendary status fail to fully live up to their reputation - but not Plan 9 From Outer Space. It is just as magnificently terrible as you ve heard. It s all here... The infamous not-so-special effects as aliens in car hop outfits invade Earth in hubcap flying saucers to implement their ninth plan of conquest (the first eight failed). This time they raise the dead to conscript armies of mindless cadavers (well, three!) featuring the most famous lady zombie of all, Vampira, the hulking ex-wrestler Tor Johnson and Bela Lugosi in his swan song performance. Sadly, he died before filming was completed. Happily, Wood's wife's chiropractor took on the difficult role - made more so by the fact that he was taller and bore no resemblance to Lugosi at all. Audiences stared in disbelief at the studio floor under the moving grass in the cemetery, as the gravestones teetered or fell over completely, as night constantly changed to day and back again and at a cockpit set that wouldn t get into a school play. TV psychic Criswell narrates: 'Can you prove it didn't happen?' In fact he says it all: 'There comes a time in every man's life when he just can't believe his own eyes'. Presented here re-mastered from the original cut negative. That is, from the actual film that Ed Wood ran through his camera. The merits of this incredible movie have not been exaggerated. This truly original film is Ed Wood's Citizen Kane. It has been said that Plan 9 From Outer Space is a hymn to all those who have tried nobly to create something memorable and meaningful and failed miserably every step of the way. Extras Include: 1) Flying Saucers Over Hollywood: The Plan 9 Companion (110 minute documentary). 2) Saucer Vision (White Rabbit Feature). 3) Ed Wood's Greatest Hits Trailer Reel. 4) Original Ed Wood Movie Posters. 5) Biogs. 6) Filmogs. 7) Stills.

Edward D.Wood Jr. was a filmmaking genius. Nobody could make films as bad as him if they even tried (and some have, just look at Batman & Robin). Plan 9 is his masterpeice. It's completely awful but you just can't help but watch it. You'll be in hysterics at the "space ships" hanging from fishing wire, the Oscar worthy acting of Tor Johnson, the shakey cardboard cut out gravestones and the ever changing sunlight to name but a few. By the way keep an eye out for the detective in the graveyard scratching his head with the barrel of his loaded gun. The extras on the DVD are fantastic with a great and lengthy documentary which revisits the old studios, interviews the stars and some of the fans including Sam Raimi and Scott Spiegel (their Tor Johnson impressions are priceless). If you like comedies then you love this unintentionally funny classic. You need to watch this because remember, "FUTURE EVENTS SUCH AS THESE WILL AFFECT YOU IN THE FUTURE."

So bad it's good 19 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
How do you review a film which is universally panned as being the worst film ever made? Well it's obvious, you must tell it like it is. Actually it isn't that obvious at all. Yes, this is a truly awful film created by people who clearly had no idea what they were doing, but the irony of ironies is that all that incompetence and earnest endeavour makes this an unintentional comedy classic.

For those that say this is the worst film ever made, you've obviously never watched anything with Ben Affleck in it.

Genius. Buy. It never gets boring watching this film.
