JEFF LOOMIS’ complex shredding has been a central part of the progressive but powerful and thrashy edge often attributed to Nevermore’s trademark sound since the band’s formation in 1992. As the band’s lone permanent guitarist, he’s been responsible for some of the most awe-inspiring riffs modern metal has ever heard. Taking the classic techniques he learned from ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Shredding masterclass 27 April 2012
By Will C
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Plains Of OblivionIncredible! Don't compare to Zero Order Phase. That was then; this is now. Jeff leaves plenty of space for his guests, to play and be heard, unlike some I can name. It's all technical stuff, that makes you go 'how the....' Back you go to listen again at what was played. If you're like me, I take a few times before I've worked out what and how in any playing. All it does is make me want to get a 7-string, and an 8-string to with my current 6-string. (I'm not new to Schecter either.)
The digipack is solid, almost like a hard-back book. The design is on the dark side. The only problem I had was reading some words, and that's partly down to me as I ought to wear my glasses more than I do.
My sound system gets a good run when this cd goes on. Accidently, I'd left the surround settings on high from earlier. The least said about people next door, the better. Queen fans who never go to Rock shows, and definitely not to a Metal gig. Anyhow, it sounds superb at any level, but better L-O-U-D!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars State-of-the-art instrumental CD with killer graphical art and some neat guest musicians on it 8 Mar 2013

I was totally impressed with the first one (Zero Order Phase, released in 2008), but with that Plains of Oblivion I am completely astonished. I could say that now Jeff could do even more than when he was in Nevermore. The product in that limited edition is perfect, with killer graphical aspect, and even with the lyrics of the bonus tracks written in the booklet (a really good aspect!). Negative aspects? Well... maybe the fact that in the end, the two bonus tracks aren't as near as good as most of the tracks of the standard tracklist. The vocal performance of Christine Rhoades, with all my respect, kinda sucks in that two bonus tracks.

Another bad thing is that they will re-release this record, as I recently heard, as a "tour edition" with some other songs as bonus tracks like A Liar's Chain, Speak of Nothing, plus one more brand new song (I don't even know if they will include the 2 bonus track of that 2012's limited edition I bought). For me that sucks, because the fans will have to buy the record again. In my opinion they should put some outtakes and/or alternate mixes in that new version, instead to put the same 10 tracks of the standard tracklist of Plains of Oblivion.

This is an absolutely amazing album from Jeff Loomis!! If you loved his last solo album Zero Oder Phase, you need to buy this. Guest appearances from Tony MacAlpine, Chris Poland, Marty Friedman, Ihsahn and Christine Rhoades (who appeared on Nevermore's album Dreaming Neon Black)
I highly recommend this to everyone, u will not regret this purchase!!!!

great guitarist for the modern shred style, he is very fast and precise, I think the songs
could be a little more melodic but for the sake of shredding it's cool!!!!
