Product Description

Review
"An account of a quest that leaves [Bender] content and, magically, has the same effect on the reader...In prose that seems to echo the rhythm of Amish life, the author kicks around some old questions with surprising freshness...Listening to her gentle voice consider the questions is charming and, somehow, invigorating." -- "New York Times Book Review""Just plain wonderful...I haven't read such a nourishing book for a long time."-- May Sarton"As simple and vibrant a creation as the Amish quilts that first drew Bender into her journey."-- "San Francisco Focus"In her graceful tribute to a community of people who value the ordinary as an end in itself, Bender allows us to sojourn vicariously miles away from the frenzy of contemporary urban life."-- "Publishers Weekly

Synopsis

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and insightful perspective., 17 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I have read and re-read this book several times. It is a lovely story and written very well. It let's us know that everyone is human and in all communities there are good things and not so good things. Take the good and leave the rest. I have drawn on some of Sue Bender's experiences with the Amish and applied them in my own life. How wonderful to be able to read about someone else's experience and feel like you are there by their side.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life., 24 Jun 1998
By A Customer
This book took me on a journey through my own everyday life. I really was able to stand back and look at my life through a plain and simple perspective. Happiness is not about reaching a final all-powerful accomplishment; it is about enjoying each experience in life. Each task, thought, and experience is just as meaningful as the next. Only when we begin to make this realization are we truly happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spreading the word, 29 Nov 2006

(REAL NAME)
All of Sue Bender's books are treasures. I read and re-read them every time life gets a bit too hectic and I need an infusion of wisdom and gentleness. In simple language, with plenty of visual symbols, Sue shares stories she has heard, conversations that she has had, and her own thoughts and feelings - even her most vulnerable ones - with the reader. These books are ideal companions. I have bought extra copies of several of her books to give to friends - they are a treasure that I want to share.

I first heard Sue Bender on NPR talking about her Amish experience...I was enthralled with it. Later I found the book and read it start to finish in one sitting. Read more

I found myself reaching for my highlighter! There is so much soul in this probing, insightful, and touching book. It continues to make me rethink my attitudes and agendas.
