Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book made the short-list for the Philip K Dick award and it's not hard to see why.
In Plague War, Jeff Carlson continues exploring a world devastated by a machine plague that has left all warm blooded life below ten-thousand feet dead. Whereas the first volume of the trilogy, Plague Year, concentrated on the harsh fight for survival among the isolated peaks of the Sierras, Plague War widens the lens to encompass global geopolitical concerns.
That's not to say that there's any let up in the visceral horror of the situation. Despite carrying a nanotech vaccine that, by and large, keeps the plague at bay, Cam and Ruth have to battle through a natural world that has been turned upside-down--and then rattled some more. Ant swarms, hot zones, stagnant diseased bodies of water, and macabre gridlocks are just some of the trials they face as they trek across the broken American landscape.
Through a couple of other characters featured in the first volume, the Russian cosmonaut/diplomat, Ulinov, and the US Marine, Major Hernandez, the wider story is fleshed out, and when things come to a head, Cam and Ruth have to battle not only with the environment, but with their consciences as well.
Plague War is a taut, scientifically and politically astute thriller, and I can't wait for the concluding volume!

Having read Plague Year and thoroughly enjoyed it, I was really looking forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed and if anything Plague War is even better than the first novel as it develops the characters and draws us into their lives as they struggle to survive. I am now waiting impatiently for the third volume......

Very disappointing! "Plague Year" was a gripping, pessimistic tale of true apocalyptic terror and survival - "Plague War" is bitty, often unfocussed and lacking in the power to keep one's attention.
