Book Description

27 April 2012
A new strain of bubonic plague is diagnosed in London. Before it can be contained it spreads through the population, faster and more deadly than anyone could have imagined. Three weeks is all it takes to decimate the country. Johnny tells Liz not to phone the NHS when their young son starts to show symptoms. But she ignores him and a few hours later the army arrives and boards them into their house. Now Nathan is dying and there is nothing they can do to help him. Hours pass like weeks as their little boy grows weaker and weaker. All Liz wants is that they die with some dignity but the authorities refuse to help. Then the broadband dies and the phones stop working. Cut off from the world and boarded into their house, the family try their best to cope. But there is nothing they can do to stop the plague.

About the Author

Lisa C Hinsley’s career has been varied, working as an architectural technician, a pet sitter, a pharmacy supervisor and most recently a carer/companion for elderly ladies, all the while writing when she can. Born in Portsmouth in 1971, Lisa grew up in England, Scotland, and America. She now lives on the Wirral, in northwest England, with her husband, three children, and four cats. Her hope is not to be thought of as the American cat lady, but some things are just inevitable. Lisa’s novel The Ultimate Choice won an excellent Publishers Weekly review in the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Lisa’s novel What Alice Sees was a runner-up in the 2010 UKA Opening Pages Competition and placed in the May 2011 Best Sellers Charts on Arts Council website YouWriteOn. An earlier novel Coombe’s Wood finished in the semi-finals of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award 2009 and was awarded runner up in the all-genre Book of the Year Awards 2008 on YouWriteOn. Now listed on Amazon Kindle, Coombe’s Wood has also sold over 23,000 copies. Lisa’s novel The Crocodile was short-listed in the Undiscovered Authors 2006 competition. Several of Lisa’s short stories and poems have appeared in print publications.

5.0 out of 5 stars A chilling and realistic read 4 April 2012
By Hollygo
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this in one sitting last night, couldn't put it down. The story centres round one young family as an outbreak of the bubonic plague takes hold (such a refreshing change from having a super flu rammed down our throats!). Lisa Hinsley manages to capture the sheer terror of each member of this family from the first signs of symptoms to the inevitable end. Whilst reading I went through so many emotions, sadness, horror and sheer terror that this could really happen!! There is an excellent written chapter which surpasses even Stephen King in it's description of both physical and emotional horror. I have happily filed this away in my horror section of my kindle, not sure whether this was the authors intention but she scared me to death!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book. 25 Feb 2012
By Marj
Format:Kindle Edition
This book will put you through an emotional wringer. You will feel that you lived it along with Liz and John and poor little Nathan. At the end is hope. This is an extraordinary book. Ms. Hinsley is to be commended on her skill. I would like to see a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plague-tastic! 16 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A superb read! For a story that is set in just one house, with only one family, it is a truely intense read. I really felt for the family, and boy did I feel like I'd been put through an emotional wringer afterwards. It was scary in its plausibility and a story that will stay with me for a while too. But PLEASE now write a sequel......

5.0 out of 5 stars Plague a novel by Lisa Hinsley 22 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Plague is the second book I have read by the wonderfully talented author, Lisa Hinsley. The first being, My Demon, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My Demon whetted my appetite and on completion, sent me scurrying to Amazon in search of more works penned by Lisa. I chose Plague, but wasn't truly convinced it would be to my liking. Boy, was I wrong. From the first page the story gripped me. It is cleverly and thoughtfully written, leaving nothing to the imagination. Housework was neglected, social life put on hold, reaching the end of the book became my main priority. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was very impressed by the skill and sensitivity of the author, in dealing with such a potentially disturbing subject. I would strongly recommend Plague to all readers,as a highly enjoyable introduction to Lisa Hinsleys works. To some it may be a giant step from your normal genre, but it is a thought provoking and fulfilling journey from beginning to end. Plague is not a book you forget about as soon as you complete it, but one which leaves you with a sense of appreciation for all the goodness in our lives. This is the first review I have ever written, such was the intensity of feelings aroused within me.

5.0 out of 5 stars heart wrenching 8 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a feel good story but one of hardship and trauma. I felt for each character in this story and I must admit my heart ached at some points. I have never read a story that has stuck with me for so long. This is a hard read, especially if you have children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and horrific 6 April 2012
By Ignite TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This novella is one of the 'what if' category of dark, horrific stories I so enjoy. It's not a comfortable read but it makes you wonder what you would do, how you would cope, in those cirumstances. A new strain of bubonic plague is wiping out the whole of Britain though initially the government assures people it is contained in the south. Gradually everything, internet, phone, eventually water, are cut off and the little family of 3 is left to its own devices.

It's not a happy story but it ends with a little uplift of hope. I really enjoyed this. I had a little niggle at a repeated grammatical error but I still found the book sufficiently engaging that I can award 5 stars. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books i have ever read 11 Jan 2012
By sarahb
Format:Kindle Edition
I would just like to say how much I have enjoyed your book. Graffic, heartfelt and earie. It scared the life out of me and yet all the while I was deeply involved in the characters. I'm from Liverpool myself an my wife an I have a young son, so this story as it evolved had me so gripped I finished the entire novel in a day. Thank you for this story an I hope to read more of your work soon, for now though I'm keeping this story in my head fresh! I would love a paper copy of your novel for a friend who doesn't own a kindle, is it available? Thanks again, you are a true talent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing but also hopeful. 8 May 2012
By S. Horrigan TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What would happen if the UK had a major outbreak of Bubonic Plague? How would the authorities and the health services cope? How would individuals deal with a disease that is almost always fatal?

These questions are answered in this really brilliant piece of speculative fiction by Lisa Hinsley. Liz and Johnny find themselves quarantined in their own home after their four year old son is diagnosed with the plague. Their life falls to pieces around them as they both try to care for their dying son, but also fear for their own lives and the lives of friends and relatives. I really liked the way that the author picks up on the small pieces of normality that continue to happen in even the most abnormal of circumstances.

This is the third book I have read by Lisa Hinsley and in my opinion this is by far the best of her work to date. I started the book on Sunday afternoon and other than taking a break to get a couple of cups of tea, I read the book straight through and finished it on Sunday evening. The pace and intensity was almost frenetically unrelenting, forcing you to keep turning the pages even though you really didn't always want to know what was going to happen next. Both distressing and harrowing, but in its own way also hopeful - and with a beautiful little twist near the end that I honestly didn't see coming.

Presentation on the Kindle was also pretty much perfect too. I didn't spot any formatting or typing errors in the entire book.

Overall: 5 stars - One of, if not the best story I have read so far this year. Highly recommended indeed.
