With the city of Exeter ravaged by an outbreak of the 'yellow plague', Sir John de Wolfe, the county coroner, must divide his time between visiting his brother Willam who has been struck down by the disease, and dealing with a series of brutal murders which appears to be linked to a revival of heresy in the city. When some of the cathedral canons begin a crusade against this danger to the Church, Sir John is accused of being too sympathetic to the heretics, bringing him into conflict with the ecclesiastical authorities. As the situation worsens, the coroner finds himself having to seek sanctuary in order to save his skin. Can he survive long enough to unmask the real killer?
About the Author
Professor Bernard Knight, CBE, became a Home Office Pathologist in 1965 and was appointed Professor of Forensic Pathology, University of Wales College of Medicine, in 1980. During his 40-year career with the Home Office, he performed over 25,000 autopsies, and was involved in many high profile cases, including that of Fred and Rose West, and the child killer, Mary Bell. The author of numerous popular and academic non-fiction books, he has written thirteen novels in the Crowner John mystery series. Professor Knight lives in Cardiff.

I have read and enjoyed all the Crowner John novels. Professor Knight has not only researched the history of the period - the reign of Richard the Lionheart - thoroughly, but has added credibility to the detail of his murder mysteries by bringing to bear the knowledge he has acquired during his long career as a forensic pathologist.
My heart sank a little when Crowner John went to work in London (Crowner Royal - 13th in the series). He hated London life and yearned for his home patch in Exeter, and I felt for him. I still enjoyed the book, but John de Wolfe was clearly out of his comfort zone. What a delight to have him back in Exeter for this new Crowner John Mystery (No. 14), still battling with Matilda and still missing the delightful Hilda. Just like old times.
Only this book is not quite like old times. The coroner is stymied when it comes to the murders that occur in and around Exeter, and stymied by the outbreak of yellow plague which curtails his activities and brings him heartache. Whether or not he can find the murderer or murderers is, in this book, much less important than the developments in his own life. I enjoyed A Plague of Heretics as much as I've enjoyed all the others in the series, but it has left me with a feeling that I might have just read the very last Crowner John mystery. I hope not.

Having discovered Crowner John at a book sale, I have now read them all, and was pleased to find A Plague of Heretics, was the latest release.
Once again another brilliant story, John, Gwyn and Thomas are again finding murderers, and some dodgy dealings within the church.
I didn,t expect the last three chapters, to produce the surprises they did, or indeed the outcome. There are also some lovely heartfelt moments for the three of them, which I didn,t expect.
I e-mailed the author, Bernard Knight, to compliment him on the fantastic set of books, that Crowner John are, and asked if there were to be anymore, he told me this was the last one, when you have read it, you will understand why. I was hoping for one more, as I really wanted to see that dispicable former sheriff Richard De Revelle hang, it couldn,t happen to a nicer person !!!!!!
I recommend you will find it a good read, as they all are.

Very simply a great read about great character who will be missed by many. I would reccomend this to any lover of medieval novels.

Brilliant as ever!
