As a long-time fan of Sparks, since the '70s, I do have all of their albums on CD. But am I ardent enough to purchase "Plagiarism"? It is after all just a reworking of various songs - all of which I obviously already have. At face value, it would be like acquiring a "Best Of..." album - pointless!
In one mad impulsive moment, I clicked the <Add to Basket> button and without hesitation went on to <Checkout>. I can only think that I did this so that I could truly pronounce that I did own ALL of their CDs. How nerdy is that!
You know what? I'm so glad that I did. Most of the modified versions of their songs excel in their own right. Sure, it's a self-tribute album - but it works. Who would have thought that the original version of "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us" could be topped? But it has. Just listen to this new one with guest Faith No More - It's raw with a punkish edge - just great (and my favourite track).
The other track in collaboration with Faith No More, "Something For The Girl With Everything" and Jimmy Somerville with "The No. 1 Song In Heaven", are just superb. The operatic rendition of "Propaganda" is so joyfully pretentious.
I urge all Sparks fans to add this album to their collection - you won't be disappointed.
