Plácido Domingo, one of the greatest opera singers of all time, and one of the few classical musicians who can genuinely be considered a household name, is 70 in January 2011.In 2010 he proved he is still going strong through incredible performances of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at Covent Garden, his first performance as a baritone. He also appeared in the extremely popular live televised performances of Rigoletto. In his own words “If I rest I rust”!
To celebrate Domingo’s incredible career Sony releases this 70th-birthday tribute box set--a 12 CD-compendium of recordings made by Domingo from 1969-1989, including his 1969 label debut for RCA of Romantic Opera Arias. The enormously varied repertoire includes excerpts not only from career defining operas but also from rarely performed works. He duets with other outstanding singers of his generation such as sopranos Leontyne Price, Renata Scotto, Katia Ricciarelli and baritone Sherrill Milnes.
Also included are the albums of lighter Spanish and Latin American music--pieces that have been close to Domingo’s heart since his youth--and the recording of arias and duets by Zarzuela, with soprano Pilar Lorengar, recorded live at the 1983 Salzburg Festival. This collection provides a real feast for the ear and the spirit for the legions of Domingo’s admirers around the world. The collection is attractively packaged with original vinyl replica discs and original album artwork in a sturdy outer box.
