4.0 out of 5 stars Subtle but rewarding, 17 Jan 2005
This is very understated and subtle electro jazz but can be quite potent at times. In this album we hear what Europeans were up to while their US counterparts (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock) were rambling through the joys of using synths and other electronic equipment for the first time around the late 60s and early 70s.

This album has a distinctly French feel to it. We can hear in Moulin's music the same light Gainsbourg popiness which underscored Air's brilliant "Moon Safari" and also St Germaine's music and still seems to crop up behind so many French offerings. Here, as with Air and St G, it is of course the electro keyboard which delivers this characteristic. "Humpty Dumpty" is a good example of this - it's a friendly, warm and light melody that greets you like a hug from a good friend. Very likeable.

"Aria" too is more of a recognisable melody and this shows Moulin's band are great wanderers within a track's composition. They constantly refresh the track with new turns and added instrumentation. "Balek" sounds less like jazz than some filmic score. This track's foundation is a deep swirling synthy sound very, very much like Massive Attack's sound which was hailed as so refreshing when it first came out - except this was done in the early 70s.

There's plenty more innovation on this album with the band alternately leaning toward more electro experimentation ("Stomp") at one turn and then knocking out more 'safe' tunes such as "Dag Merci Madame".

This is slow growing, subtle jazz that will gain favour amongst avid jazz fans fairly quickly on listening. It may not hit the mark straight away or impress non-jazz fans as it doesn't scream out it's virtues immediately but it should be good 'chilling music' for those folk and a great piece of jazz history for those into jazz already.

4 stars as it doesn't jump off the disc as an out-and-out corker but it's damn fine, understated jazzmanship.
