4.0 out of 5 stars A very good reference book for place names in East Gwent, 18 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Place Names of Eastern Gwent (Paperback)
If you know the area and are fascinated by the origin of place names you will enjoy this book. About a hundred and eighty place names are covered, with source references thoroughly indexed, in 112 pages. Ever since I moved here in 1972 I have wondered about the origins of some of the place names. Some, like Earlswood and Newchurch, are obvious, but who would have thought that in Devauden and Llandevaud, "devaud" means different things? In Llandevaud it is the name of a saint (Llandevaud = "Church of St Tavauc"), and in Devauden it is just an accident of the joining of words, as Devauden comes from "Ty'r ffawrydden", or "Beech Tree House."
