Product Description

In the heart of the leafy Cotswolds a body is found.  A teenage girl, probably local, somebody's daughter who went out one evening and didn't come back.  It is not long before she is identified: fifteen-year-old Lynne Wills who habitually drank underage in 'The Silver Bells' pub and, one the night of her death, was seen leaving with an unknown man.

Chief Inspector Markby's friend Meredith Mitchell has been befriended by another troubled young local girl, Katie Conway.  On the surface Lynne and Katie have nothing in common except their age and home town.  But could the insights Katie gives Meredith into her difficult family background - an unstable, aristocratic mother, a doting father at the end of his tether, and a scheming resident secretary - throw some light on the other young girl?  And, given that forensic evidence now points to Lynne Wills's murder having taken place in the Devaux family mausoleum, on her murder too ...?

I am going through the whole series and love every book.
What I like about that series, is the fact that there is a personal story - the inspectors complicated but happy relationship -mixed with a exciting crime scene.
The fact that the inspectors girl friend is always interfering with the investigations because she is so curious and always connects well with other people, is giving is this additional twist and sparkle.
The series of books also gives some insights in English country side - landscape and way of living - which I also like.

Having read several Mitchell & Markby novels, I was pleased that this book like the other novels in this series did not disappoint, it kept me guessing until the very end and wanting more! I particularly liked the way that Ann Granger has managed to create believable characters that are both likeable and interesting. Anyone who enjoys a good whodunnit will find this an excellent choice that they just can't put down and will surely find themselves buying more of the series.

The best of British style mysteries 5 Oct 1998

Ann Granger is one of the few authors around today who still knows how to write an authentic British mystery. She is one of the best.

Murder at the manor. 4 July 2005
By Linda Pagliuco - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Two teenagers turn up missing, then dead, in separate incidents in this quiet English village. One is the daughter of the lord of the manor. The other comes from a working class broken home. Is there a serial killer on the loose? Are the girls as innocent as they seem? Are their murders even connected? What about the ensuing deaths? Meredith does some amateur sleuthing, and CID officer Markby, who wants to marry her, wishes she'd just keep out of it. But the evidence she discovers proves invaluable, so much so that she nearly ends up dead as well. What's a copper to do?

This somewhat slow-moving mystery sustains interest with its settings (a 200 year-old mausoleum, for one), and its colorful cast of supporting characters (the village drinker, not an alcoholic, mind you, the insane lady of the manor, the man-hunting American secretary), and its Englishness. Granger is a decent writer and a good storyteller.

Sixth in the series 29 Dec 2008
By S. Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is the sixth in the Mitchell and Markby series, and the series just seems to keep getting better. These are true English village mysteries with colourful casts of characters, deft plotting and a tricky little mystery to figure out. In this book a young girl's body is found lying in a ditch and Markby has to figure out what happened. We have Meredith Mitchell now living in Bamford, so that puts her right in the thick of things. When she befriends a troubled teenage girl, she doesn't realize that it puts her right in the middle of a murder investigation. She works with Inspector Markby to try to bring a killer to justice. This is really a delightful pair of sleuths, and I am really enjoying this series.
