Product Description

Product Description
An immensely humorous and original tale of Englishmen abroad, inspired from the hit Channel 4 series. Charting the adventures of affable yet bumbling Nigel, looking for a place to renovate in the deepest Ardeche, this compelling, original and slightly bonkers tale sees him first foray to France with the common-sensical Nippy, and later take up partnership with the truly eccentric Reza, as the pair decide to open up an Indian restaurant. Perfectly capturing the cultural and emotional wrangles of moving abroad, the book is bursting with character; featuring mad estate agents, a love triangle between Nigel, a pretty French girl - and her boyfriend - the trials of persuading people that Indian cuisine is what is needed in the French countryside, a chef that pulls out of the project a week before the grand opening, and of course Reza's recipes, this is a great stand alone read that also enjoys television support with the transmission of the new peak-time series.

About the Author
Nigel Farrell is a seasoned journalist and TV producer; he is also a published author, having written the accompanying book to the BBC series " The Village".

5.0 out of 5 stars Watched the series, fill in the gaps., 29 April 2004
Watched both series - both highly enjoyable. This book concentrates on thesecond, "An Indian Summer" and the efforts of Nigel to find an incomewhilst living in France and the decision to open an Indian restaurant.
It is without doubt a good read either as a stand-alone or having watchedthe series. The book fills in the gaps from the series - especiallyconcentrating on the sequence of events from inception through to openingand follow up. The apparent lack of thought as to whether the idea wouldbe successful is documented - well if it failed there was always the TVmoney guess.
The insight into the characters, how they view each other off the recordare all there and as for Reza what a character!
Whether the book would have been written without the series, debatable, without Nigel efforts though there would be nothing. A guy who has writtenfrom the heart, deserves a break but has he found what he is looking forboth in employment and love?
There are obviously similarities to the Provence books by Peter Mayle butI felt this book was a lot more personal. A debt subsequently owed by thetourism office to Nigel.
Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic (with the exception of Nippi), 22 Jun 2005
Having watched the series and read the book, I have to admire both Nigel's the staying power and writing ability. I feel that the book is a far better reflection on the reality of the situation while the series tends to portrays Nigel as some sort of bumbling moron - more for the sake of good television than an actual diary of what happened.

What did annoy me greatly was Nippi's shameless highjacking of the restaurants idea. The sheer nerve and audacity he had to claim it was all his idea in the first place while it's plain for all to see that it was mainly Nigel's drive and vision (along with Reza's expertise) that made it happen.

I just hope we can expect to find more from Mr Farrell in the near future as in his writing he presents an honest, frank account of what happened, even at the risk of not portraying himself in the best light at times - which only goes to strengthen his achievements in rural France. An excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down. A sheer delight to read., 7 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Nigel Farrell may well do for the Ardeche what Peter Mayle did for Provence. This is the book created from the delightful Channel 4 television series but gives the reader a much deeper insight into the chaotic and hilarious goings-on in the south of France. It is just impossible to put down. Delightfully written with brilliant contributions from the superb Reza Mahammad, I can't wait for the sequel. I hope Farrell's success as an author can end his much documented financial problems once and for all! How long he can continue to enjoy this little known area of France remains to be seen. Farrell has written -- perhaps inadvertantly -- a wonderful travel guide to the Ardeche. My air ticket is already booked and I suspect legions of his fans will follow!
