Product Description

A PLACE CALLED FREEDOM begins in the infernal coal mines of the Jamisson family, in the Scottish highlands, where twenty-one-year-old Mack McAsh spends most of his waking hours.  Bound to his employer for life, Mack burns with an insatiable desire to escape.

He finds an unlikely ally in Lizzie Hallim, the beautiful, willful young aristocratic woman who yearns for independence in a male-dominated society.

Mack's hunger for freedom brings him into conflict again and again with the harsh rulers of eighteenth-century Britain.  Accused of riot--a capital crime--Mack becomes one of the thousands of convicts who are shipped to the American colonies, to work as slaves for seven long years.

With its vivid, fascinating portrayal of the colorful streets of London and the endless landscapes of the New World, plus an unforgettable cast of heroes and villains, lovers, and rebels, hypocrites, hell-raisers, and whores, A PLACE CALLED FREEDOM is a magnificent epic of love, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Book Description

In a brutal world, charismatic rebel miner Mack McAsh - a slave by birth - is a man with the courage to stand up for what is right, and the strength to stick by his beliefs. Independent, rebellious Lizzie Hallim, meanwhile, is engaged to Jay Jamisson, the ruthless landlord's son and heir to an exploitative business empire. Born into separate worlds, Mack and Lizzie are thrown together when Mack becomes an enemy of the state and is forced to flee his homeland. Lizzie aids his escape, and it is not long before passions rage in the old world as well as the new . . . Set in an era of turbulent social changes, A Place Called Freedom is a magnificent novel from the undisputed master of suspense and drama, Ken Follett. 'A compulsive, sweeping adventure' Today 'Gripping historical narrative' San Francisco Chronicle --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

....but didn't find one. I agree with the other reviews that this is a truely captivating book, excellent characters and a very interesting insight into white slavery of all things!

However I felt that the thought that had gone into the storylines could have gone better - there is one particular abrupt change of direction.

Unlike Eva from Norway, I loved Pillars of the Earth, which I rate as one of the best three books I have read (approximately - I couldn't name the other two) and I like the detailed rambling styles as found in Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time) books.

However, I would still recommend this as a entertaining read!

This is the type of story at which Follet seems to excell. It does not quite have the grip that Pillars of the Earth had, but then that was one of the best books of all time so hardly surprising. It does however come very very close. The story of the underdog who makes good, in spite of all the odds, as well as characters which come to life. Some you hate some you love and some you love to hate. It all makes the book difficult to put down. Leaves the reader wondering did this really happen or was it really fiction?

Finished already? 24 May 2004
By Eva
Format:Paperback
I can't believe how fast I finished this novel! It's really captivating. It has a simple basic plot; something outrageously unfair happening and the oppressed working towards getting his revenge. Good guys and bad guys. Simple, but it really works. I also enjoy the detailing level. Nothing seems to be superfluous, yet you get a clear picture of things.

Better than Pillars of the Earth, which was captivating too but tediously long.

Not as good as "Pillare of the Earth" or "The Fall of the Giants" ( which were exceptional) but still a good read with an excellent spy/thriller story.
