Sometimes you come across an unfamiliar composer by chance and decide to find out more.On occasion such curiosity pays off,as in the case here.Pizzetti(1880 - 1968)is one of those composers who are ripe for rediscovery by UK audiences who might be looking for something off the beaten track of standard repertoire.
Pizzetti's music has elements of Respighi,Debussy and Strauss, though his work is more then pastiche or amalgam of undigested influences,it has plenty of individual character and originality of conception to warrant investigation. Pizzetti's style is strong on soaring lushness,a wealth of musical incident and melody coupled with evocative thoughtful passages that act as a prelude to yet more symphonic grandeur. If you are putting this disc in your CD for a introspective low-key listen, then don't.If however, you want a stimulating and engrossing musical experience that can soar to the heavens and rap you up in a glorious melody or some piece of atmospheric arrangement, then this disc is a very entertaining piece of work altogether.
I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this well packed disc - the music is well worth getting to know, the performances are first rate and the sleeve notes informative and well written. Recommended.
