Product Description

Product Description

The KJV Apocrypha in a single volume. The Apocrypha ('hidden things') are contemporaneous with the Old Testament, but were not officially accepted as part of the Bible when the Hebrew 'canon' was set. They did, however, form part of the Greek Scriptures and came into English Bibles by that route. The writings of the Apocrypha run the whole gamut of literary genres: histories, romances, devotional works, proverbs and sermons. Many complement parts of the Old Testament and readers will recognise some familiar Biblical characters in the narratives, such as Daniel and Esther.

Book Description

The hidden texts of the Old Testament world - the Apocrypha are the books written at the same time, but not officially accepted. They include histories, romances and proverbs – plus extra writings about familiar Biblical characters such as Daniel and Esther.

The King James or Authorized Version of the Bible in English was originally published with the Apocrypha (or Deuterocanonical books). The complete Bible was generally printed in subsequent centuries, until the 1900's, when the Apocrypha was generally dropped from KJV Bibles. But those books do have a KJV translation, difficult to come by these days, but here is a nice quality volume of just the Apocrypha. There is one edition of the entire KJV, including the Apocrypha, from Oxford (ISBN 0-19-283525-4).

I'm terribly sorry but I just had to append this meta review to explain. Though this body of text was originally incorporated to KJV pre-19'th century, it is NOT generally accepted by mainstream Christianism/Judaism. Is it not part of the 'Bible' if you take Bible to concern the official cannon of scripture recognised as true holy scripture.

The Apocrypha include books that were written around the same time as the cannon, but were not incorporated due to conflicting views, accounts, or just strangeties that make them not fit in with the rest of the books accepted into cannon.

The books of the bible were collated into the bible some 500 years after Jesus. Before that time, the scripture was exactly that... scriptures. Individually contained bodies of religious text written in scrolls by scribes on papyrus, animal hides, etc. Each book of the bible is called so because they were once separate creations.
