It is hoped the book will preserve the dialect for future generations. --BBC Breakfast News, August 2nd 2007

An exceptionally rich combination of borrowings from Old Norse, Dutch and a score of other languages with inventive usages dreamed up by the miners themselves. --The Guardian, July 30th 2007

Fills a huge gap in present day knowledge of the subject and at the same time it is an exceptional read. --Beamish Museum

From the Back Cover

The last major mine in the North East region closed in 2005 and with it went away of life. Through dialect words, humour, stories and songs Pitmatic: The Talk of the North East Coalfield will help you to understand the working and everyday lives of miners. Miners who provided fuel, helped sustain an economy, consolidated communities and created a unique and rich regional culture.

Bill Griffiths is the author of the critically acclaimed A Dictionary of North East Dialect and Stotty `n' Spice Cake: The Story of North East Cooking. Pitmatic is his heartfelt attempt to bring together the words spoken by these miners and their families and how they relate to the wider language-world of the region and its literature of story and song.

"The welcome arrival of the book Pitmatic captures a unique dialect of Northern coalmining. Pitmatic is a language within a language developed by coal miners as their own form of communication both below and above ground. First noted in the 1870s Pitmatic is, with the closure of the coalfield, fast disappearing. Bill Griffiths has rescued for posterity this distinctive cultural tradition".

Bill Lancaster, historian and Director of the Centre for Northern Studies

This book compiles a language that has all-but disappeared from the North-East. Its attention to detail and flawless research earns its place with any linguistic text book found in a typical university library. It reveals how the North-East vernacular language originated and evolved, highlighting its heritage in Denmark and Holland, as-well-as Norse and Anglo-Saxon origins.
Not only does this book give extensive information on the language of the miners, but it gives a more in-depth understanding of their lives and occupation.
Bill Griffiths has let his true passion for his adopted home flow from every chapter. A marvel of a book, and a must read to anyone who this subject has or will affect.

Pitmatic: The Talk of the North East Coalfield (Wor Language) Bill Griffiths is the undisputed authority on north-east dialects and this book shows his thorough and academic approach to his subject. This is far more than a dictionary of pit language: it is a complete history of the way miners talked both at work and socially. It is as much sociology as linguistics and a most facinating record of a way of life recently gone. Bill Griffiths deserves thanks for preserving this.

This is the best dictionary of pitmatic that I have ever read. Purely North Eastern language is dying out in the region, but for those of us who grew up speaking it, this is a welcome addition.
It's a reminder of a world gone in my lifetime, and will appeal to future generations of scholars, or those interested in the past.

Having worked twenty five years in the North-East mines it brought back the way in which every day communication was used.
Probably hard to understand if not from a mining background, but could be a good amusing book for any one interested in the mining folklore.

An exposition of the nature of Pitmatic, the language of the northeast coalfield - a very comprehensive investigation into its unique characteristics and its roots. Excellent.
