SCAR SYMMETRY were formed in 2004 by Jonas Kjellgren (Carnal Forge), Henrik Ohlsson (Theory In Practice), Per Nilsson (Altered Aeon), Christian Älvestam (Incapacity) and Kenneth Seil. Their music is a strange mix of brutal death metal with highly melodic choruses and heavy use of synthesisers. 'Pitch Black Progress' is the band's second album and follows last year's 'Symmetric in Design'.
The diversity on this disc is the most extreme I have ever heard. Opening track 'The Illusionist' pummels like something you'd expect to hear form DEICIDE, before versatile vocalst Kjellgren siwthces to a beautifully harmonic voice to deliver one of many catchy choruses on the album.
My highlight of the album is the one of the more melodic tracks on show, 'Mind Machine'. A superbly written track, full of infectious melodies and a strong head-baning lead riff.
Whilst undoubtabley their strongest attribute is the versatility of their frontman, SCAR SYMMETRY do also show a high degree of technical musical ability as is required to succesfully pull off a project of this style and diversity. The production of the album is also well done and the sound is dark, crunchy, tight and very polished.
The guitar work on the album is also worthy of specific mention. Just check out the virtuoso solo on 'Calculate the Apocalypse' along with the awesome double-tapping guitar work backing the chorus. This is just one example of excellent guitar playing delivered throughout the album.
If you like both brutal metal and a touch of melody then you will definitely like SCAR SYMMETRY. In 'Pitch Black Progress' they have firmly put their names on the metal map and certainly deserve recognition. Keep an eye on these boys!
