5.0 out of 5 stars how it should be done 19 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
what we have here could be the very ideal definition of what melodic death metal should sound like.

riffs that shake the earth to its core, acknowledged alot are heavily influenced by meshuggah and a little by KSE from that stop/starty chugging style in the verses that lead to fantastic catchy choruses and at long last a band that know that guitar heroics are brilliant if used properly and these boys use them perfectly.

the same is true of the vocals, the range the singer has is scary, he has got one of the most gutteral growls ive heard in a long time, worringly also a very good black metalesque screamy screechy thing going on, mix this with a hardcore shouty type thing in places and a fantastic clean singing voice to hold the songs together and take you to places that you never thought death metal was capable of doing.

in short this album is a masterpiece.

and dreaming 24/7 could be one of the most complete songs ever written.

i would sincerely recommend this album to anyone who is looking for exceptional song writting combined with skull crushing effeciency and for once a death metal band that doesnt rely entirely on its drummer to blastbeat their way throughout the WHOLE goddam album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing. 18 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
I've never experienced such a raw explosion of power and emotion like this before.

Christian Älvestam provides an incredible mix of clean melodic and a true guttural roar/growl for vocals. It is not your typical pansy growling and screaming. This comes from deep within.
Drumming is very solid, the double pass pedals will blow you away, as will the impressive guitar work... plenty of chugging riffs and clean ripping solos.

The lyrics are largely metaphysical, and while you're probably too busy headbanging, it is very interesting to read up on some of the things they talk about.

A couple of the songs to seem formulaic, but are catchy nonetheless - they are the most accessible while still remaining true to form.

I can't really say anything more. I don't really know how to describe this.

You can never go back to your regular music after hearing this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scar Symmetry - Pitch Black Progress 17 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
SCAR SYMMETRY were formed in 2004 by Jonas Kjellgren (Carnal Forge), Henrik Ohlsson (Theory In Practice), Per Nilsson (Altered Aeon), Christian Älvestam (Incapacity) and Kenneth Seil. Their music is a strange mix of brutal death metal with highly melodic choruses and heavy use of synthesisers. 'Pitch Black Progress' is the band's second album and follows last year's 'Symmetric in Design'.

The diversity on this disc is the most extreme I have ever heard. Opening track 'The Illusionist' pummels like something you'd expect to hear form DEICIDE, before versatile vocalst Kjellgren siwthces to a beautifully harmonic voice to deliver one of many catchy choruses on the album.

My highlight of the album is the one of the more melodic tracks on show, 'Mind Machine'. A superbly written track, full of infectious melodies and a strong head-baning lead riff.

Whilst undoubtabley their strongest attribute is the versatility of their frontman, SCAR SYMMETRY do also show a high degree of technical musical ability as is required to succesfully pull off a project of this style and diversity. The production of the album is also well done and the sound is dark, crunchy, tight and very polished.

The guitar work on the album is also worthy of specific mention. Just check out the virtuoso solo on 'Calculate the Apocalypse' along with the awesome double-tapping guitar work backing the chorus. This is just one example of excellent guitar playing delivered throughout the album.

If you like both brutal metal and a touch of melody then you will definitely like SCAR SYMMETRY. In 'Pitch Black Progress' they have firmly put their names on the metal map and certainly deserve recognition. Keep an eye on these boys!

5.0 out of 5 stars Retaliations Coming! 30 May 2007
By Bod
Format:Audio CD
This is brilliant. It rarely leaves my CD player. I can't say much more. The vocals are dark with excellent growling but at times the tone is more melodic. Every song is great in its own way. Best song is possibly Illusionist, Dreaming 24/7 or Retaliator.

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful brutality 17 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
this band draw a few comparisons,to me they are a heavier more agressive soilwork with a strapping young lad tinge. i find it hard to pick between this or the debut as to which is best but they are both quality.more proof that europe has all the best bands!

3.0 out of 5 stars a very solid 3.5 out 5 here ,very solid indeed 30 Oct 2006
By sean paul mccann VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
scar symmetry have released an album that while maybe not as good as their previous release is still an essential example of death metal with melody, for those that count in flames as a melodic death metal band then i say no to that as this is death metal with melody while in flames are more gothenberg metal with metal and while scar symmetry are also swedish this is heavier and equally as melodic.

the vocals are death in style but never suffocating as clean vocals soar in very quickly so the logistics of the sound arent weighed with death metal as displayed by bands like deicide, this is death metal that you will sing along too and while that may sound strange its entirely true
