As a relatively recent resident of Glasgow, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Following the hero from a holiday on Mull, back to the city streets, I could relate to it all. The creation of a "new" football club, fully consistent with the culture of the city, and yet inserted into the reality of now and here, is a brilliant stroke! All of the back-story relating to the SPL and the Scottish League is relevant and still not intrusive to the main tale - but will draw in anyone who has followed football in Scotland.

However, this is not a book about football; it is about human beings, their underlying motives and drivers, and what they will do to bring them to fruition (or to stop others from bringing theirs to fruition!)

Borrow it, beg it, or even buy it - but I can recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who enjoys any form of crime fiction.

I must admit this book sat on my shelves for a time as I'm not a lover of football. However, I am a fan of Alex Gray, and this book did not disappoint me. This was a cracking good mystery and, although I'm quite good at spotting the murderer, I didn't guess this one and it was a complete surprise. But then, that's what you want from a good detective story. So, on balance, apart from the football I would readily recommend this book.

Pitch Black - Alex Gray 13 April 2008
By S. Lloyd VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The plot centres around a Glasgow Football Club - Kelvin FC. The novel opens with a wife fleeing the scene of her footballer husband's murder, who is a new signing to Kelvin FC.
More murders relating to the Club follow and DCI Lorimer is assigned as SIO. Lorimer's character is endearing and interesting but it lacks something in "Pitch Black" concerning detection skills and interaction with other police officers. The pace seems to plod along at first. Once the murderer is detected - which is not revealed to the reader - Gray cleverly quickens the pace as there is a rush to catch the killer. There are plenty of motives and not until the end do you guess who the killer is.

There is a theme running through the novel regarding a lost ginger cat which is given a home by Maggie Lorimer which seems to represent having loved and lost - but I felt it was dull and detracted from the main plot.

However Gray has used some good techniques to bring "Pitch Black" alive, with short passages within one chapter, giving the feeling that actions are being carried out simultaneously, radio commentries and press cuttings. She also brings the landscape a visual vitality and as stated on the dust jacket bring Glasgow to life.

Overall I found this an enjoyable read but not to the level of the more "seasoned" crime writers.
