Product Description

Product Description

A fantastic futuristic thriller of a deadly new frontier. A rogue comet spears an earth-bound commercial spacecraft, forcing it to plummet to the surface of an unknown planet. With the captain dead, a brave pilot performs a perilous crash landing. Other than three suns-which create perpetual light-and a slight oxygen deficiency, a search party discovers that the planet isn't much different from Earth...until they stumble across a ghostly settlement littered with the human remains of geologists who mysteriously perished exactly sixty years ago. And the most horrific discovery of all: below the surface of the soil, where darkness reigns, live hungry predators with a deadly appetite. Once every sixty years a solar eclipse darkens the skies and allows the blood-hungry creatures to escape from their underground tomb. With only hours before total blackout, everyone must unite in a race to raise the geologists' abandoned ship before becoming a long-awaited meal...

I loved the movie and decided to read the book. When I received it I realised that it wasn't written prior to the film, but after. A simple run-down of what happened in the movie. I felt that it was quite badly written. I am usually more of a fan of books rather than acting as you get to see deeper into the characters and situations. This book unfortunately did the opposite, although my opinion may be biased by the fact that I thought the acting performances in Pitch Black were outstanding. Overall the story idea is great - it is quite contrived but it's direct action, straight into your brain and it gets the adrenalin pumping. The way the characters develop is amazing, but its dealt with quite poorly in this book. However, it gets two stars for covering pieces which were missing from the movie and tying up some things that I felt were left hanging. It's also a good companion for those of us who have seen the movie four times and feel that it might be pushing it (and our wallets) to go again.

Audrey??? 8 Sep 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As books go this was ok, the explanation of how Riddick became a hunted man was a good tie-in to the movie... but WHY OH WHY was Jack's name changed to Audrey and made into a girl upon intro. Sad... there goes the moment of revelation that was such an excellent moment in the film. And making out that Riddick was some kinda reluctant hero, some do-right standup guy? Riddick, first and foremost, him helping anyone else was just a byproduct. The change in his way of thinking came at the very end with the death of the pilot. Other that this the book followed the movie and was a good read but Audrey definitely ruined it for me.
