Amazon.co.uk Review

Steven Seagal muscles his way through Pistol Whipped, another brutal action flick. This time Seagal is a boozing, compulsive gambler forced by a mysterious stranger to assassinate mob guys and corrupt cops. Naturally, this makes it hard for him to be a doting father to his adoring young daughter. Pistol Whipped has some twists to its plot, but this is all moot--you either like Steven Seagal or you don't. If you do, this is one of the better of his straight-to-video oeuvre. Seagal's attempt to be tender is laughable, but the story isn't completely predictable, the supporting cast isn't bad (Lance Henriksen, Aliens, brings some elegant menace to the proceedings), and though the martial-arts scenes are brief, they're not as choppily edited as in some of his other movies. If you don't like Steven Seagal, you'll find his bloated, wooden presence as repulsive and hateful as it was in every other movie he's ever made. He has two expressions--squinty and scowly--and they're increasingly difficult to tell apart. His one cinematic quality is a lumbering menace, and for his fans, that seems to be enough. For them, Pistol Whipped has plenty of lumbering and scowling on display. --Bret Fetzer

Pistol Whipped 18 Feb 2008
Format:DVD
After "Exit Wounds", his latest wide theatrical release, the quality of Seagal's movies have been uneven at best. Sometimes awful. "Urban Justice" broke with the trend and delivered what the fans expected. "Pistol Whipped" does the same, perhaps even more.

Luckily, Joe Halpin, co-writer of such bombs as "Mercenary for Justice" and "Attack Force" seems to have had nothing to do with the script of "Pistol Whipped". Halpin gone seems to mean potentially good movies by real writers. "Pistol Whipped" was, instead, written by JD Zeik, (Ronin).

The movie is not without flaws (some parts of the story, especially those that dealt with Seagal's family problems could have been better developed, but it is entertaining and should please Seagal fans and some casual action/thriller viewers. There are some nice action sequences, including a shootout at a cemetery.

I hope Seagal continues to work with the kind of people he has been working with on his last two movies. I don't want to see another "Attack Force" but I'd be glad to se another "Pistol Whipped".

Each time a new Seagal movie is released on DVD, I watch it in the vain hope that it will be at the least better than the last.

Each time there is some disappointment, in Pistol Whipped it is the start and the end where Seagal in slow motion crosses a line of gunfire, turns and fires apistol without looking and without being hit. There is certainly a lot of mirth in the movies.

The sad thing is that I really need to come to terms with the fact that his best days are behind him, as are his best movies, and it is time to find a meaner, leaner martial arts fighter-actor.

Worth a watch but do not expect too much.

Just a mess.
I know that Steven gets poor reviews for his later movies ( and I tend to agree ), but I just thought that perhaps alongside Lance Henrikson it would be better.

Action packed
A twisted story line with high emotions running and serious martial arts sequences. Way too many bullets fired and a distinct lack of normal/non-corrupt police enforcement. Read more
