Amazon.co.uk Review

Despite most gamers’ enduring affection for all things piratical a breakdown in the usual laws of licensing (which decrees that any movie with an explosion in it must be turned into a video game) has conspired to make this the first serious attempt to actually adapt the whole of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. To make up for lost time this actually tackles both Dead Man’s Chest and the new movie. In this sense the bloated narrative of the two Pirate sequels leaves just enough plot to stretch out for a single game.

Although you do get to control the other characters occasionally, most of the game is spent in the heavily swaying boots of Captain Jack Sparrow. This is a shame, not because the characters play exactly the same, but because their virtual likenesses are almost scarily realistic. In fact the game’s graphics as a whole are extraordinarily good, showing a level of effort and attention to detail that sadly isn’t really matched by the gameplay.

On a basic level this is exactly the sort of third-person action game you’d expect for a movie tie-in. As such there’s a smattering of very simple Prince of Persia style platforming and lots and lots of sword fighting. The latter actually seems a lot of fun at first, until you realise you’ve really only got one attack button that matters and jabbing that at random is enough to get you through most of the game. There is a separate fighting system for boss encounters, but this also seems to have a rather patronising opinion of the average player’s hand-to-eye co-ordination. Although, if not for the excellent graphics, that makes it no different than most other movie adaptations.

Fun:
This game is advertised as a RPG but i have to disagree, 1st off there is little to no interaction with characters that you pass by during your quest, yes theres the generic statements like "oh your a pirate" but you cannot interact with the everyday generic characters, to the point where if you hit them or swing at them with a sword nothing what so ever happens.. a few characters you can interact with, but by interaction i mean you walk up to them and they tell you what do do next.. this is no fable which is more of an RPG than this game could ever wish to be.

The camera angles are terrible at times, imagine walking across a fallen tree over a large drop and a huge leaf is in your way blocking your view of your character, one false move and you drop to your death.

The collision detection seems ok for the fighting parts of the game but when it comes to pulling switches or opening chests its very poor and frustrating.

the difficulty level in some parts is unforgiving.. for example, you pull a switch that opens a gate which is across a large drop, you have to make your way across a fallen log with terrible camera angles and leafs blocking your view, your drop but manage to catch yourself and pull yourself back up, you may fall a couple more times.. by the time you get across the damn gate has closed shut.. even if you fall just once the timing is way too strict.

another problem is when you stop your character moving they dont stop dead on the spot, they always seem to take a step more than you want, not good when navigating ledges on high cliffs.

there are good points to this game, the graphics are great, especially on the characters, they do really look like their movie counterparts, the amimation is really good too, the backdrops are stunning and the gameplay isnt too bad but the bad points can lead to too much frustration.

Fun:
I have been a fan of POTC for a long time, since before the first movie and I went on the ride in Florida (incredible that three feature films can be made from a 10 minute ride). I bought this game, but have not bought the previous ones, after playing the demo downloaded from Xbox Live. I find that the game play is good, though occasionally the AI ganags up on you and you struggle to keep up, the idea of swapping between each character during the action is messy at times and has cost me a few lives.

The graphics are fantastic, especially during the movie sequences, and the gameplay graphics are smooth, the soundtrack is reminiscent of the films, though the voices that the games firm got to do the main characters could be better, though some of the minor parts are by those in the films (Johnathan Pryce for one).

Overall I give this 4 stars as it is an excellent game, for young adults, myself being 25 find the dialogue a little tedious, but what should I expect! I keep enjoying this game and relish the ability to unlock new secrets as it progresses.

Fun:
For any RPG fans out there, this game is not for you as the story is totally linear and there is no side quests that interest Jack Sparrow and company. If you are like me however, and simply watched the film and wished you were Jonny Depp then this game is a MUST OWN!!

The next gen graphics on POTC:3 At worlds end are near perfection, as is the soundtrack which both stay faithful to both films, Dead Mans Chests and At worlds end (meaning YES, you do get to play both films)

There is also, if not real, voice over casting which some are almost impossible to make out such as Jack Sparrow, Mr Gibbs etc.

Now, the best bit in POTC:3 is definetly the fighting. It is smooth and fluent, and allows you to switch between foes, just like the characters would do in the film. As you progress with the , I think 9, playable charactersyou can earn them new combo's manyof which (Especially Will's) are quite grusome. I LOVE IT!! Many items strewn around the world are fully interactable and simply add to the bloodlust.

All in all it comes to this. If you enjoyed any of the three films, are indeed all of them as I did, then go and buy the game. Belieive me, you will be playing it for hours once you lose yourself in the world of pirating!! MUST OWN!!
