This must be the funniest production of Pirates of Penzance ever. The interaction between the pirate king and other cast members (plus the orchestra conductor) has to be seen to be believed. He successfully comes across as a tough, but not very intelligent character, easily duped (at first) by an excellent major general.
Frederick is excellently played by Jon Gallaher and comes across successfully as a naive young man who has not seen a female for many years.
Unlike most productions where the daughters are played by a dozen young and attractive young women, this production very successfully uses three older actors to play the parts.
This version seems to be very difficult to get hold of - VHS unavailable and DVD only available in region 1 format, but if you get a chance to see it, you won't regret it.
I've seen many performances of this G & S operetta and, in my opinion, this is the best!
