Epilogue
'Interesting Index' - Hang on! This isn't one of your boring old indexes. This is a horrible index. It's the only index in the world where you will find `vomiting cows', `mopping-up brains', pickled heads' and all the other things you really HAVE to know if you want to be a 'horrible historian. Read it and creep.'

A colourful handbook, written in a variety of texts, packed full of information, e.g. :-

'The pirate flag was often called the `Jolly Roger' - that is from the French `jolie rouge', or `pretty red'. The first pirate flags were red. The other name for the pirate flag was `Captain Death'............'

Look out for the new title, too, - Horrible History Handbooks - 'KNIGHTS', also by Terry Deary and illustrated by Martin Brown.
'History has never been so horrible!'

I bought the Pirates Horrible Histories for my 8 year-old son who was studying pirates as a topic at school and just has a natural penchant for history, especially when it is retold in this way. I now know it off by heart - not because I've read it but because my son find it so hilarious and astounding that he reads me out every fact and every joke, sometime more than once. Essentially though, he now has a truly comprehensive knowledge of the subject and has exploded many of the pirate myths that abound about parrots etc. Meanwhile he has had a jolly good laugh doing it. He has taken the book into school and I have visions of him regaling both his class and his class teacher with his discoveries - whether they like it or not.

Yo Ho Ho. 22 May 2010

With the summer holidays not too far away, this book could at least fill one otherwise "what shall we do" day.

Young children seem to have an absolute fasination about pirates - and not just because of Jack Sparrow et. al. This book hits the spot exactly and would easily fill a wet wednesday afternoon. It's blood thirsty, but not scary. It contains a wealth of information about a real pirates life. Above all it encourages kids to ask all sorts of questions - as an adult, most of which I had to make up. It doesn't lead to sleepless nights, but in my experience to demands for pirate gear and costumes - from both boys and girls.

The great thing is that if your kids really get into it, for very little money on Amazon you can buy complete pirate fancy dress for very little cash. I had terrible trouble removing it from my son after 2 weeks of solid wear. By which time he really, really smelt like a pirate. PPS Also on Amazon there is a great site that sells inflatable parrotts.......Pirate Boys fancy Dress Costume age 6-8 and Inflatable Parrot on Shoulder - Fancy Dress Costume Accessories

PPS if you have two budding pirates you may want to avoid cutlasses.....
