Product Description

"Paired with Shannon's energetic acrylics of a colorful crew of pop-eyed, snaggly toothed pirates seen from a variety of zany viewpoints (including upside down) and a small boy who is clearly having the time of his life, this rollicking adventure is sure to be a favorite with the storytime crowd." School Library Journal, Laurie Edwards, West Shore School District, Camp Hill, PA "How I Became a Pirate" "Long's piratical dialogue still delivers a juicy read-aloud: what reader of any age won't relish the opportunity to say "Aargh!" or declare "Rock on!" as the crew does in unison when Braid Beard orders them to rock Bonney Anne to sleep? And Shannon's voluptuously colorful and comic paintings runneth over with comic mayhem, sly details (somehow, the pirates manage to find a pirate show on Jeremy's TV) and no end of goofy expressions. Ages 3-7." OK the illustrations are great, but, the activities are really poor, and there aren't many of them:

How to make a basic hat from folded newspaper
How to make a cardboard eye patch
How to make a treasure chest - decorate a shoebox, but no suggestions other than cover with coloured paper and draw on it
Several pages that are virtually blank for you to draw your own picture
A very basic maze suitable for four year olds
A couple of word games more suited to eight year olds (who is this book for?)
A naff song but no indication of a suitable tune
A very very basic page on pirate speak, again suited to four year olds
A game of snap - re-named Cannonball
A few stickers

And that's it! I didn't see a single original idea in this book.

It's a waste of money - If you like good illustrations, then get a good illustrated pirate story, and if you want an activity book, then get one with some worthwhile activities in it and a few more pages

Bought this book to use in school as doing 'Pirates' as a topic; great quality images and activities. The children love the pirate language!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every kid loves this book 27 Mar 2013

Every kid we read this book to loves it. The art's detail lets the child see the high level objects first and then continue to see more and more detail about the subject over time, so they don't tire in looking at the art as fast as other books. It reminds me of the Pecose Bill book by Ry Cooder which I never tired of as a child.

Book quality seems good, pages are strong, binding has survived for months.

My students loved the activities and ideas in this book. They were able to compete some of the activities on their own. We continue to enjoy the book and probably will for years to come.

It arrived in a couple of days in great shape. Thank you… these books are hysterical… Hearing friends, family and kids do pirate imitations has everyone giggling.
5.0 out of 5 stars A good little book for little pirates, and teachers to use. 18 Dec 2013

This book I bought for my own little pirate as a Christmas present a few years back. I have also used the activities in EFL/ESL classes to help students understand Halloween as well as a different way to approach grammar.
The activities are great, and as long as you can copy out the pages, this will give you years of use.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun 13 Aug 2013

My son really enjoys having this book. I would recommend it for any child 4 or older as some of it is more difficult for the younger ages,, but a must buy to go along with the book.
