This book is almost entirely plagiarised. That is, Cawthorne has simply copied quotes verbatim from news reports, or paraphrased them and 95% of the time given no attribution. That is plagiarism. It was clear he hadn't actually done any travel or reporting in situ, so I started to put quotes into google. Without fail, they came from the FT, Guardian, BBC or VOA. That would be acceptable if he had either made that clear in the text, or had a list of sources. There is neither. I am shocked that the publisher even published this. It is appallingly shoddy, lazy. What's more, simply listing dozens of pirate events - vessel at sea, pirates attack, pirates take vessel or don't take vessel - is deeply dull. All in all, a terrible book. If I could give it no stars, I would.

Given the potentially exciting nature of the material the book was a huge disappointment. It just a series of straight stories of various pirate acts, it is as though the author has just taken his working notes and put them into narrative form with no added insight or observations. And as many of the pirates acts are the same or similar, it does not make for exciting reading. Very repititive.
