This is the first in the Ascension Trilogy books by Gaelen Foley, and also the first book I've read from her.
Set in the latter part of the 18th century, Lazar di Fiore is on his way to destroy the Monteverdi family, and claim back what was stolen from him as a teenager. But Lazar is no ordinary man. He was the heir to the throne after his family were murdered when he was younger. Everyone believed he'd been killed too, but he survived and lived on as a pirate. When he is ready to execute the head of the Monteverdi family, the daughter, Allegra, begs for mercy. Lazar accepts, but only if she leaves the Island of Ascension with him as his captive. She accepts, not long after her father does something that traumatises her right before she sets sail with Lazar. Lazar calls his captive 'cherie' and hopes she will become his lover. Allegra doesn't want to, but over time, begins to fall for the pirate. He tells her his true identity and she is stunned. But Allegra finds her is a man who has emotional scars and physical scars, evidence of his past traumas. They fall in love, and return to Ascension to claim his lands, not before Lazar suffers his own personal tragedy, and it is Allegra who bears the brunt of his anger. He tells her he will marry Princess Nicolette for her dowry. Princess Nicolette arrives after Lazar has now been pronounced 'King,' but instantly dislikes Allegra after finding out she was Lazar's 'lover.' She plots with Domenic Clemente, a man who wanted to marry Allegra (who Lazar saves her from after he tries to rape her at the beginning of the book), so Domenic can leave Ascension with Allegra. Lazar finds out, realises he's been a fool and vows to bring Allegra back. But first he must make Allegra see how sorry he is.
Overall, I was impressed with the story. It didn't explain what happened to Nicolette at the end, she just seems to disappear. I admit I hated the parts where Lazar suddenly becomes the 'bad guy' again and treats her poorly. Just for these points, it misses a full 5 stars from me, however it's not put me off reading the rest of the Ascension series. The second book, "Princess" is due to arrive today.
