Product Description

On a calm moonlit night, as the scent of jasmine and pine embraced the island of Ascension, the pirate prince Lazar di Fiori returns with lethal grace to avenge what was stolen from him: his kingdom, his birthright, his soul. . . .

Allegra Monteverdi, the daughter of Lazar's sworn enemy, proves an uncommonly powerful adversary. She throws herself on his mercy, her courage and beauty touching his cold, unforgiving heart. He agrees to spare the lives of her family--but only if Allegra sails away with him as his captive. For his quest for vengeance still burns fiercely, and he will settle for nothing less than Allegra's body and soul.

Alone at sea with this dark, intriguing man, moving between seduction and fear, Allegra gazes into eyes as deep and mysterious as the night and sees who this pirate really is. Lazar--the prince of her childhood dreams. Though he was rumored to be murdered years ago, she always believed someday he would return. But it will take more than her love for this pirate prince to bring peace to her beloved home. For Lazar must face the demons of his shattered past--if he is to forge the destiny that is theirs to claim. . . .

This wonderful romance begins Gaelen Foley's trilogy set on the imaginary Italian island of Ascension (its sequels are Princess and Prince Charming).

It's the late eighteenth century: a time of revolution in France and unrest across Europe. Allegra Monteverdi is the daughter of Ascension's governor. But her father has usurped power from the island's royal family and the rightful heir Prince Lazar di Fiore demands revenge. When Lazar rescues Allegra from her bullying fiancé, their instant attraction forces him to rethink his plans...

Gaelen Foley brings a fresh touch to a traditional romance formula. Her writing has a real emotional charge and this is one of the best historical romances I have read in the past few years. The setting is exotic but convincing and the characters' imperfections make them much more real than the stereotypes which we often see in this genre... Lazar and Allegra are both more sensual and more vibrant than your usual hero and heroine. Add to all this a tight and exciting plot and you have a highly-recommended read - and re-read - and you'll want to buy the sequels too!

I just finished reading Pirate Prince and could not put it down.
This is the 1st in a set of 3 stories written about the Island of Ascension.
This story starts in 1785 and is about Prince Lazar who runs away from his Island home, age 13, after his whole family are murdered before his eyes.
His whole life he has wanted revenge and this takes the form of kidnapping his enemies daughter Allegra.
I found this a wonderful bittersweet story of how a gentle woman helps a man face the demons of his shattered past.
I only hope the next 2 books in this series are as good as this one. Princess and Prince Charming.

This is the first in the Ascension Trilogy books by Gaelen Foley, and also the first book I've read from her.

Set in the latter part of the 18th century, Lazar di Fiore is on his way to destroy the Monteverdi family, and claim back what was stolen from him as a teenager. But Lazar is no ordinary man. He was the heir to the throne after his family were murdered when he was younger. Everyone believed he'd been killed too, but he survived and lived on as a pirate. When he is ready to execute the head of the Monteverdi family, the daughter, Allegra, begs for mercy. Lazar accepts, but only if she leaves the Island of Ascension with him as his captive. She accepts, not long after her father does something that traumatises her right before she sets sail with Lazar. Lazar calls his captive 'cherie' and hopes she will become his lover. Allegra doesn't want to, but over time, begins to fall for the pirate. He tells her his true identity and she is stunned. But Allegra finds her is a man who has emotional scars and physical scars, evidence of his past traumas. They fall in love, and return to Ascension to claim his lands, not before Lazar suffers his own personal tragedy, and it is Allegra who bears the brunt of his anger. He tells her he will marry Princess Nicolette for her dowry. Princess Nicolette arrives after Lazar has now been pronounced 'King,' but instantly dislikes Allegra after finding out she was Lazar's 'lover.' She plots with Domenic Clemente, a man who wanted to marry Allegra (who Lazar saves her from after he tries to rape her at the beginning of the book), so Domenic can leave Ascension with Allegra. Lazar finds out, realises he's been a fool and vows to bring Allegra back. But first he must make Allegra see how sorry he is.

Overall, I was impressed with the story. It didn't explain what happened to Nicolette at the end, she just seems to disappear. I admit I hated the parts where Lazar suddenly becomes the 'bad guy' again and treats her poorly. Just for these points, it misses a full 5 stars from me, however it's not put me off reading the rest of the Ascension series. The second book, "Princess" is due to arrive today.
