Review

Praise for The Witch's Dog stories: 'Blending brilliantly paced storytelling with immensely appealing cartoon-style illustrations, these are exactly the kind of stories which inspire children to become readers' – Scotsman

Product Description

Paisley, Posso, Kelty and Spott have a new mission. Three baby polar bears have been kidnapped by the dastardly pirate Goldflipper, and it's up to Paisley and his crew to save them. At the same time, the waters of the far north sea are getting warmer and warmer, with terrible consequences, and nobody can work out why. Could there be a connection? There's definitely something fishy going on. Can the pirate penguins get to the bottom of it?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good 'transitional' read, 8 Dec 2008
By moonstix (NW England, UK) - See all my reviews
Frank Rodgers' Pirate Penguins books are a good way of enabling newly confident readers to make the step from 'picture books' such as The Magic Key series to longer, chapter-based stories/novels. Yet they are still perfect for adults to read to children - although I must admit there are quite a few characters in the Sardines of Doom and I found it a bit of a challenge to find a voice for them all!
Every page has at least one picture (all colour) to relate to the story, some with additional speech bubbles. It's not a long book and could be read in one go, which would take an adult 20 mins or so depending on your style. However, it is equally good broken down into the given chapters.
Admittedly, I was a little uncomfortable at first with part of the subject matter - the 2 polar bear children being kidnapped & put to work by the 'bad' pirate (aren't all pirates bad?!! or is that just a myth these days!) - but that was my problem, no-one else's, and didn't spoil my son's enjoyment of the book. The book also broaches the global warming issue, in a sort of cottonwool-padded manner.
It does seem to have put him off trying sardines, though.
