My 5 year old's favourite book, 3 April 2011
This is a brilliant book! I'd seen it in the book shop a few times but was a bit put off as it seemed to have a lot of words (including quite a lot of speech marks) but it's excellent- really detailed brilliant pictures and an ending that had us all (me included) taken by surprise! Then we immediately went back to the start to read it again to spot all the little clues that we'd missed the first time. Much cleverer than most children's stories so I'm imagining it will be a long lasting favourite.

great pirate book, 1 Oct 2009
This review is from: The Pirate Cruncher (Hardcover)
Brilliant book, especially for boys. The illustrations are exceptional, I agree with the previous reviewer that children will be able to enjoy hours looking at the illustrations.
As a retired English teacher, I feel the mix of rhyme & prose really works to create an exciting story with a moral.
I look forward to seeing other stories from this accomplished author & illustrator.

Fabulous book for little pirate fans, 26 May 2011
I bought this book because of the gorgeous illustrations - there's so much to look at in every picture and I thought that my 2 year old son would like it, even if he couldn't follow the story yet.
I was not at all disappointed with my purchase! It has become a bedtime favourite and even I have not tired of it yet. The book is quite long but it does hold the attention of my son. Sometimes he wants to just talk about the pictures and sometimes we read it cover to cover. When he's older I hope he understands the moral of the story (greed is bad!) but, for now, we're just loving the pirate pictures and scope it gives us to do funny voices!
To answer criticisms raised in other reviews - yes, the black print on dark background is a little challenging on the eye at times. However, I can imagine it won't be too long before I know it off by heart anyway! I also agree that it is quite a dark story, but there's nothing in it that I wouldn't expect from a book called "The Pirate Cruncher" and certainly nothing that has disturbed my son or my niece (who is also 2).
I'd recommend this for any little pirate fans (probably 2-5 years old) and parents who love sharing intelligent, beautifully illustrated books.
