The pirate's life was short - when Bartholomew Roberts' crew were tried at Cape Coast Castle in 1722, the most experienced had only become pirates less than four years before, and the majority had been pirates for less than two years, which appears to have been the typical lifespan of a seaman who `followed the black flag'.
The text is well-written and readable. The author is an expert on the age of the wooden ship. The colour plates are excellent. There are also many excellent supporting illustrations in colour and monochrome, mainly contemporary, but with a few examples of modern romantic illusions of the pirate life.

The Colour Plates
A: Recruitment. This is a crowd scene on board a prize as the pirates attempt to persuade their captives to join them.
B: The Pirate, 1690-1725. "Here is how they actually dressed, in practical clothing of wool, linen and fustian. They wore their hair short and favoured caps and small, narrow-brimmed hats rather than full-sized tricornes when at sea." This shows a pirate figure, surrounded by a dozen items of alternate clothing.
C: The Pirate Captain. "...At best, pirate officers only dressed somewhat better than their men and were very often indistinguishable from them." Here we have a pirate captain in `ordinary' dress, with a selection of the finer clothes that he might have bought or plundered.
D: Life at Sea. This is another crowd scene with 9 assorted figures lounging around on deck.
E: Weaponry. This shows a cannon and its associated equipment, along with various guns, swords, grenades, belts, knives, axes and pikes.
F: The Pirate Attack. This shows 9 figures on a deck as they approach their victim, parading about and trying to look intimidating.
G: Battle. "Blackbeard's last fight" - having boarded one of the Royal Navy sloops, Blackbeard and his men are in hand-to-hand combat on a blood-stained deck.
H: Justice. Leith Sands, Edinburgh, 1721 - four pirates on the gallows in front of a crowd; 2 awaiting execution and 2 hanging.
