Review

."..Konstam and Rickman provide a marvelous and detailed assessment through explanation supported by period and first-hand examples about one decade rife with pirates. The rogues, themselves, would find this a treasure worth hoarding." -Cindy Vallar, "Pirates and Privateers"

The pirate's life was short - when Bartholomew Roberts' crew were tried at Cape Coast Castle in 1722, the most experienced had only become pirates less than four years before, and the majority had been pirates for less than two years, which appears to have been the typical lifespan of a seaman who `followed the black flag'.

The text is well-written and readable. The author is an expert on the age of the wooden ship. The colour plates are excellent. There are also many excellent supporting illustrations in colour and monochrome, mainly contemporary, but with a few examples of modern romantic illusions of the pirate life.

The Contents are -
P04: Introduction; Chronology
P07: Recruitment
P12: Skills
P17: Appearance
.The pirate of popular imagination
P28: A Pirate's Life
P36: Violence
P48: Plunder
P52: Revenge
P55: Fate
P60: Pirate Resources
.Museums & Galleries; Pirate events
P62: Further Reading
P65: Glossary
P64: Index

The Colour Plates
A: Recruitment. This is a crowd scene on board a prize as the pirates attempt to persuade their captives to join them.
B: The Pirate, 1690-1725. "Here is how they actually dressed, in practical clothing of wool, linen and fustian. They wore their hair short and favoured caps and small, narrow-brimmed hats rather than full-sized tricornes when at sea." This shows a pirate figure, surrounded by a dozen items of alternate clothing.
C: The Pirate Captain. "...At best, pirate officers only dressed somewhat better than their men and were very often indistinguishable from them." Here we have a pirate captain in `ordinary' dress, with a selection of the finer clothes that he might have bought or plundered.
D: Life at Sea.

Definitely one of the best titles from the warrior series. This is a really good but frustratingly short, book about pirates of that period loosely called The golden Age, it seeks to correct a lot of the myths about pirate lore and present a more accurate, sober and unromantic picture of aspects of the pirates life especially their dress. The illustrations are by the self-taught artist G Rava, I've not been impressed by some of his previous work but these are excellent, his style is well suited to the subject and the vignettes contained in here are all lively, colourful and very well composed.
If the book has a fault it is just that it could have been longer.

I love these titles by Osprey as they bring the world of another age to the modern reader in an easy to comprehend, informative as well as entertaining way, especially when added alongside the cracking artwork of Giuseppe Rava to bring it all to life. It's well written, it brings the characters of the age to life and it allows the reader to find pieces of information that is not only interesting but something that they're going to remember for a long time.

Add to this a lot of solid research, great informative backgrounds as well as a roundup of events to the time period involved and it's a book that might be worth getting for your own little freebooter, especially with all the interest around the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
