Amazon Review

Pippi is an irrepressible, irreverent and irrefutably delightful girl who lives alone (with a monkey) in her wacky house, Villa Villekulla. When she's not dancing with the burglars who were just trying to rob her house, she's attempting to learn the "pluttification" tables at school, fighting Adolf, the strongest man in the world at the circus or playing tag with police officers. Pippi's high-spirited, good-natured antics cause as much trouble as fun, but a more generous child you won't find anywhere.

Astrid Lindgren has created a unique and lovable character, inspiring generations of children to want to be Pippi. More than anything, Pippi makes reading a pleasure; no child will welcome the end of the book, and many will return to Pippi Longstocking again and again. Simply put, Pippi is irresistible. (Ages 9 to 12) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

'Pippi is in the great tradition of children's protagonists who subvert the adult world, whether by questioning it, like Alice, or simply throwing it into chaos, like Dr Seuss's Cat in the Hat.' (Guardian)

'Generations of children have grown up loving these wonderful stories about the invincible girl with the unforgettable name.' (Manchester Evening News)

Have just read this collection of short stories to my six-year-old daughter. Pippi Longstocking is an eccentric girl with a pet monkey, a horse and a collection of gold coins who buys a cottage in a quiet little village (in 1940s Sweden), moves in, and proceeds to live life exactly as she pleases. This is my daughter's ultimate fantasy!

She makes friends with neighbouring children Tommy and Annika, and as the local adults wring their hands about a child living on her own, Pippi, with extreme good nature and playfulness, has fun with anybody who tries to control her, from bullies to burglars to policemen to schoolteachers to a very irate circus ringmaster.

The stories are still fresh and have very little period detail that needs explaining. They are very lively, and my daughter has requested the other two books in the series.

My daughter loves this adn the books have been great too. We started with one of the books and then followed it up with this cd. This prompted the purchase of more books which my daughter is digesting with gusto!

Would make a great gift for a girl of between 5 and 8ish depending on reading ability.

Great stories to listen to, the only thing is they are read with an American accent, but once you realise that they are great!

Bought this for our lad (who enjoys Pippi Longstocking), on the grounds that it was an unabridged reading, and we've been enjoying the gift version of the book together. An audio book would mean he could also listen in his room of an evening, and independently. Unfortunately, this is an American version, so "holidays" become "vacations" and so on. Whilst our son did enjoy the audio, he was somewhat confused by the differing vocabulary used, and initially thought we'd bought the wrong story. Our child likes to listen to audio books whilst following the printed version, or just between our readings of the same books, so we'd have preferred to know that this audio *wasn't* the same version we'd been reading.

I've been looking for a book to entice my 10 year old daughter to read! I remember this book when I was a young girl and hoped it would be one she enjoyed....she did! She still isn't a book worm and I doubt she ever will be, but I have caught her reading several times with out being asked so it defiantly a start! Going to order another in the hope she'll read on holiday!

First book we read to the kids, before we found the larger sized compilation book with this story in it. The story is great the pictures in the compilation make it slightly better and the kids now read them for themselves out of choice over their school reading book which are a few stages behind these books.

One of my one to one students read this book with her nan last summer and she says; 'I think it's a great book because there are so many things that go on and it is not one of those books you'll easily forget. Pippi is a young girl who lives on her own because her dad is a pirate. My favourite part is probably when the police are trying to catch her with her monkey but they can't because she climbs on the roof. I think this book is for all ages because my nan loved it when she was reading it with me and I told my younger sister all about it and she wanted to find out what was going on by looking at the pictures'.

Pippi is not really like other girls. Though she is just a child she lives alone in a large house with her monkey and horse. Her hair is red, her socks are two different colors and , oh yeah, she is the stongest girl in the world. A very unorthodox hero that makes Harry Potter look like an ordinary child. Wonderful.
