Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The demand for organic food is rapidly increasing and many people are keen to try their hand at growing their own. In Pippa's Organic Kitchen Garden Pippa Greenwood, of BBC Gardener's World renown, sets out to create an organic garden from scratch.

We follow the creation of Pippa's kitchen garden from the early stages where she plans and digs the plot to create the right layout to the successful cultivation of vegetables, fruits and herbs. The plan that Pippa devised is illustrated to show the designated sections for each type of plant she gives useful tips for choosing a plot. A gentle slope that catches the sunshine is perfect. This first section goes on to give advice on preparing and clearing the site of weeds and debris, what is essential for fertile soil and how to naturally protect crops without chemicals. She also addresses the problem of pest and disease prevention, which can be a concern in a chemical-free kitchen garden.

Pippa goes on to give tips on growing individual fruits, vegetable and herbs, including traditional lettuces, root vegetables and summer and winter fruits, but also relative exotica such as radicchio, artichokes, hot peppers and melons. She also shares successful tips, such as harden your tomato plants before transferring them outside, lest they suffer from the sudden change. Practical advice of this sort is abundant and the photographs that accompany the pointers are mouth-watering. The end of the book includes an invaluable sowing and harvesting calendar as well as a list of useful addresses for advice and supplies. Pippa's Organic Kitchen Garden is a convincing and useful introduction to the rewards and challenges of growing your own produce. --Karen Homer

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners, 9 Sep 2002
By D. Hughes (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As somebody who has just got an allotment and has been reading round all the various gardening books in the library this is the one that I've decided to buy. Why? It is clear, well laid out, easy to read, and answers most of the questions I've got at this early stage in my gardening experience. The only issue I do have with it is the too brief bit of space it dedicates to crop rotation.

All in all a good book, and one that I hope will give me a solid base on which to expand my knowledge.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 16 Nov 2003
By CATHERINE (Salisbury, Wiltshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is easy to read and full of colour photos. However, I did notfind it a useful guide to organic gardening. I had imagined there would be tips on aspects such as companion planting; but what you get is a diary of Pippa's garden with just a few tips hidden amongst the text detailing her own successes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide, 18 Mar 2009
This a a great book about growing your own produce. As other readers have stated, it doesn't really go into the full details of how to do things organicaly - i.e. companion planting etc., but it is never-the-less a great book about fruit and veg. A bargain.
