Being the mother of two budding pipers here on Skye, it was with excitement that I borrowed this book from our local library. However, whilst the book was very informative with regards to the origins of piping on Skye and included many interesting and enjoyable anecdotes, I found several inaccuracies relating to more recent names and events (i.e. a reference made to former Pipe Major Ronald Monk). I also don't think the book has done justice to what has been achieved in recent years by the piping tutors of Skye, especially I.R. Finlayson, Nial Stewart and Pipe Major Alan MacKenzie of the Isle of Skye Pipe Band, who have hugely contributed in securing the future of bagpiping on the island. Thanks to these hard working, enthusiastic teachers, the number of young chanter players and pipers has almost tripled in recent years, and it is impossible not to notice the steady increase in both the standard and the number of entrants at piping competitions in Skye and Lochalsh. It would have been nice to see these current developments honoured in a brand new book on Skye Piping. It doesn't seem to me that the author took the time to speak to anybody presently involved in the teaching of piping on Skye. I sincerely hope that this will be rectified in any following editions of this book.

Comprehensive and detailed history of the subject, almost up to present day, with a good mix of abstract and personal perspectives. As a native, I know many of the people and families mentioned; this history is well-organised, accurate and fun to read!
