Great piping and has become one of my favourite cds. Piping may not be for evertyone but if everyone heard piping this good, it would surely be more popular.

best of both,
This review is from: Piping Centre Recital Series, Vol. 4 (Audio CD)
In angus MacColl you have an excellent piper of the traditional, conventional type, playing the kind of tunes you expect: so far so good. But then, in his half of the programme, the late Gordon Duncan takes it off in another direction altogether - quirky modern compositions played in his inimitable fiery style, with complete disregard for competitive conventions - finishing with an exhilirating set of reels played in the pacy way reels should be. Dynamically recorded, in terms of pure Highland pipe music this is hard to beat. My only complaint is I would have liked a pibroch from MacColl, to join the (very correctly played) one from Duncan.

IMHO, this is one of the best in the Piping Centre's series of releases. Angus MacColl's playing is superb and crisp. And Gordon Duncan- well, what more needs to be said about him? Impressive, as always. This disc of solo performances is a must-have for pipers and any fans of pipe music. Casual highland pipe fans will enjoy this as well; the energy of MacColl and Duncan is infectious. Plus, no pesky tenor drums get in the way of the tunes. :)

MacColl and Duncan-need I say more? Both are highly gifted and it shows on this cd- a must have for any bagpipe fan.

This CD is very accessible even to those who have never heard a full concert of bagpipe music before. I was introduced to the instrument through a friend who played. After expressing that I enjoyed listening to him and wanted to hear more, he gave me this CD. I was blown away (pun intended). Gordon Duncan is the Eddie Van Halen of piping. His fast riffs and unbelievable sounds put him in a class all by himself. Angus MacColl is also amazing with his masterful playing.
In short, if you don't know anything about piping, this is the place to start, with this CD. If you know everything there is to know about the muisc, then this is also the CD for you. |
