About the Author

Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn't think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition. He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art and then set up home in London. Axel illustrated a number of books for various publishers, and in 1993 he was suggested as the illustrator for Julia Donaldson's first picture book text, A Squash and a Squeeze. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership: their bestselling modern classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over three-and-a-half million copies worldwide, and the TV animation was broadcast on Christmas day 2009. Axel has illustrated a number of other highly successful books, including Muddle Farm, and his books have been translated into 42 languages. Axel lives in London with his partner and young daughter.

I just found this book in our local library and decided to give it a go, so my toddler and I sat down in the afternoon to read it. And read it. And read it. I had to read it 5 times to my child!! Even after that she still looked at the book herself and spoke about it in the evening, it was hilarious! The story about Pip who loves his big red balloon but lets go of of it really captured her mind, and the happy ending - after the balloon pops Poppy comes to the rescue and offers bubbles as a substitute- was the icing on the cake.
The pictures are full of small details that children (and adults!) love, simply a great buy!

I'm pleased to see all the other five star reviews, because this book is wonderful in all ways.

Firstly I've found there are surprisingly few books that are suitable for young toddlers just starting to gain some words and take a step up from the baby stage. My daughter (17 months old) has a good selection of almost all the well-known titles for babies, and we go to the library as well. However she has never loved a book as much as this one.

It has beautiful, detailed illustrations full of items she recognises from everyday life. But even better, it has a proper story - a simple, sweet story full of concepts she understands. Finally, it manages to be sweet in a real way, without being cutesy.

However the highest compliment is: my daughter made me read it to her twenty times the first day it arrived. Again and again and again... Then the next day: again and again...

I have looked at a couple of other books in the same series and they all seem as thoughtful and well-conceived as this one. So I intend to buy them all (as time goes by).

Oh one last thing - the quality of these books is also wonderful. A pleasure to hold and read.

Many thanks to the author/illustrator.

The Pip and Posy books are absolutely fantastic for children. I have 3 of them and intend to get the whole set. My 2 year old grandson absolutely loves them and after reading any of them I can guarantee he will say "again?" He wants them reading to him over and over again. He is just over 2 years old and the writing on each page is just enough for this kind of age, but not only that, each page gives opportunities for discussion. That is because the illustrations on each page have fantastic detail and lots of things to talk about, something different every time. I am also a teacher and have taken these books to school to read to 6/7 year olds and they love them equally. Would recommend these books for children, can't praise them enough.

I have fallen in love with the Pip and Posy series. Not only are the illustrations fabulous - I wouldn't expect anything less from Axel Scheffler - but the story is adorable. My son (aged 2) loves this book. He loves balloons, he loves to say "balloon!" The story is simple and yet engaging. Not much text on each page but enough to make the story interesting. He is able to join in with the story and shouts out "pop!" when the balloon pops... and "bubbles" when Posy has an idea... The illustrations are so lovely that there is plenty to look at and point out when going through the book again. It's certainly a good choice for 1.5 - 4 year olds. Great for a present too!

Pip and Posy and the little accidents they have in their life, with a happy "Hurrah!" at the end of each book, are fast becoming a favourite with my 2 and 6 year olds. Beautifully illustrated, the book are delightful. The Big Balloon has Pip wandering around town with his friend Posy and a large red helium filled balloon. Disaster strikes, but Posy saves the day.
