Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Freya North's latest novel, Pip, can only consolidate the reputation she has already established for sharply written, high-energy novels of character, in which her heroines battle against considerable odds to maintain successful careers and relationships. As in such books (similarly bearing their protagonists' names) as Sally,Chloe and Holly, North has created a memorable central character. Thirty-year-old Pip McCabe has been surviving quite nicely (she says) without a man, love or money. But her sisters and her friends disagree: Fen and Cat (the heroines, in fact, of North's last two novels) are trying to inject a little more love and sex into her life. She, however, is something of an obstacle to this plan, with a tendency to wear outrageous clothes and an indifference to her general appearance. Then along comes the 34-year-old Zac Holmes, who is living the life of Riley, enjoying his successful career and looking after his much-loved young son. Freya North's strategy, needless to say, is to keep both these individuals apart--and get them together. She creates canny obstacles in her plotting, and in the process delivers a highly enjoyable read.

Against a series of strongly realised urban backdrops, we watch the hero and heroine dance around each other, and utilise language the way an earlier generation used rapiers. This is not Booker Prize material, and doesn't pretend to be. But readers seeking a highly entertaining, exuberant read (with a capricious heroine who charms the reader as much as she infuriates) need look no further. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coudn't Put it Down!!!!!!!!!!!!, 23 Jun 2006
This review is from: Pip (Paperback)
After finishing university, looking for a job, working only part time in the evenings...i wanted something better to do with my time other than watch TV. However at the same time, having read so many accademic books over the years i wanted something light-hearted, funny, something that would keep me wanting more..THIS WAS IT!

I coudnt put it down! i finished it within a couple of days, the night i finished it i was up reading till 2am just so i could sleep in peace otherwise the suspence of the last few chapters would have killed me!

I only bought it because i heard Freya North was fantastic and she hasnt let me down. i plan to read all of her books, starting with Fen and Cat. Cant wait to start them. IM HOOKED!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pip., 26 Aug 2003

This review is from: Pip (Paperback)
Throughout the book and probably the rest of her life, if she had her way, Pip is determined to stay as agony aunt to her two sisters. Although she does not want a life of celibacy; she sees not having a serious relationship; the ultimate way maintaining her independence. Her dual personality fused into one by her love of children sometimes gets in the way of her getting what she wants.
The first twenty one chapters I read with no stopping; but I personally felt it then lost its way; but then found itself again a few chapters later with me at the end wanting more detail, more story in fact I wished it had not ended.
I had not read anything by Freya North before, in fact I only came across her by accident. A throat infection kept me away from work, an interview on day time television where she was described as a woman who was paid to dream all day about sex left me intrigued. Next day I went out and purchased Pip. Glad that I did I will read more of her books so here hoping they live up to their reviews and are as good as Pip.
