PIONEERS OF
THE ELECTRIC GUITAR
SCORCHING LICKS, SLIDE TRICKS & SEDUCTIVE PICKS
Is a fabulous collection of 75 original LEGENDARY TRACKS.These sets really are a steal at this price.

The simple reason that these sets are as cheap as chips is that the tracks are public domain.

That means the rights to the music has gone and any old Dick or Harry can release them.

The bad news for the previous rights holders means good news for us, the buyers for if the price is too high we will not buy.
So the sets are at a more than reasonable price.
Next year the law changes to fall in line with the Americans and the 50 year rule will be finished.

Now these sets really are a mixed bag.

Some tracks and artists you will know- others not.

But that is the real joy- you just might discover some tracks you have never heard and enjoy if not then the FF feature is just for you.

This is not a real review just an aid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornucopia Of Delights 29 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
An absolute gem of a collection. It covers nearly all styles from Jazz to Western Swing, Blues to rock and roll and a whole smorgasbord in between. Listened to it all on a journey from Norfolk to Devon and never became bored. Obviously some tracks are well known and available widely elsewhere. However, there are many obscure gems and half-remembered delights. If nothing else, it will broaden your horizons. A thoroughly enjoyable recommended collection and a bargain at this price, presumably because most if not all are out of copyright!

Considering the price, this confirms the headline. It's a good history lesson and some of the tracks are quite hard to come by. Brilliant.

First off, check out Glen Cook's review for a full track listing. (NB Track 25 on CD3 should read "The train kept a -rolling by Johnny Burnette".) Now go, as I did: Wow! Oh yeah, and look at the price. Again: Wow!

And now that you have, find a similarly inclined friend and prepare to have a great fun argument about who is and who isn't a pioneer of electric guitar, who should be included but wasn't (bear in mind the cut off date of 1962) and who shouldn't but was.

Blues artists are, as they should be, well represented in this compilation -all three Kings, Memphis Minnie, Albert Collins, and many more. But I admit to being croggled when I saw the inclusion of Lightnin' Slim. Now Po' Lightnin' happens to be my uncontestable favourite obscure primitive electric bluesmen and one of my very favourite blues guys full stop. But not even his more rabid fans (such as myself) would claim that he was a pioneer of electric guitar or that any original ideas he had didn't come from someone else. I can only assume that the compiler is as fond of the guy as I am. "Blow your harmonica, son."

Checking out the names you come across the obvious like Les Paul, Link Wray, Duane Eddy, Scotty Moore, Johnny Otis and people you'd never expect like Bert Weedon (snigger). [Sorry, shouldn't have said that. Weedon and his book "Become a rock guitar god in fifteen seconds" (something like that anyway) was an enormous influence on just about every British guitar hero to emerge in the 60's, and by all accounts he was one of the nicest people you could wish to meet. I just can't forget that line from a Bonzo Dog song -"We are normal and we dig Bert Weedon, hahaha"- out of my mind.] There's also the John Barry Seven, The Shadows and Johnny Kidd & The Pirates holding up the British end.

Some hidden gems, here, but also some make-weights.
Good value for money though. Sorry for a limited review - time presses!
