4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a very good product 9 Sep 2013

Only significant disappointment was that it is not wifi enabled. There is a LAN connection but that will require a significant network re-connection job in the house. So I will have to buy another bit of equipment to enable a wifi connection Same goes for bluetooth. Another issue is the RDS radio - I have not been able to get the sytem to automatically display radio station names and it seems that I have to enter them manually. This is bad - nearly al radios have an automatic naimg faciliity. Hopwever it looks great and the sound quailty is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price 24 Nov 2013

I bought this amplifier for our 3D/dolby 5.1 setup. Works as it should.

Good
- good sound options, automatic surround calibration, easy setup
- airplay works even if the amplifier is off
- with my panasonic TV/dvd it detects their volume control and power on/off signals

Not so good
- in 3d, on screen volume indicators are hard to read (i think the amplifier sends a 2d signal) - this they should fix
- setup on screen menu is 80's quality. You don't need it after setting things up, but still
- iphone app is horrible - the remote is better (there is no dedicated ipad app)

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy Replacement 16 Jan 2014

I bought this when my 12 yro Technics receiver started throwing faults; I was looking more for a replacement than the Next Big Thing. I was swayed to get something network-enabled partly out of curiosity and partly for my iPhone-enabled daughter. The Airplay part of it works well; I have to say this is what Apple do best (they couldn't stop me buying Japanese!!) and credit to them. The DLNA is less impressive, but I sense this is more to do with audio not mattering as much to that community. The Pioneer Android app is justifiably low-scoring.

Enough shiny-talk. What about sound quality? It's fine, certainly better than my old Technics. Pioneer supply a mic for calibration and the system sets up levels and delays by itself but I'm not sure how far they take it. I've had no reason to tweak the results, even the sub was right.

What matters more (as someone who listens to music as much as watch films) is the variety of surround modes. Close-up there is a substantial and useful difference between Movie and Music on both Dolby and Neo6 modes worth exploring. 2.0 is not an option for me; my speaker setup is eclectic to say the least. Right and Left are old AR6s with replacement Audax woofers, which have smooth but accentuated mids around 1kHz and die around 80Hz. Centre is a Court Acoustics 6" (can't find the model#) which has a sharp (tizzy) top. Surrounds are small Canford die-cast types. The sub is home-built using an Audax driver and was originally intended as a bass practice speaker (it is suitcase shaped; for a 6.5" driver - AP210Z - it's impressive). The whole Frankenstein outfit never fails to impress. But a significant part of that is the setup: the harnessing of potential.

So there are a variety of colours emanating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value 5:1 AV receiver 7 Jan 2014

At 219.00 through Amazon at least a 100.00 saving on many retailers. Airplay through the LAN connection is very useful, can play my i-tunes music from any of my Macs on the network. Had a little trouble at first making a HDMI connection between my older Sony Bravia TV, but that was sorted using a better quality High Speed HDMI lead, also no audio return channel (ARC) from the TV, but sorted using a stereo phono lead from TV to the receiver. Good sound quality and easy to set up. I paired this with the well rated and good value Pioneer S-HS 100 5.1 6ohm speaker set, also from Amazon, so very pleased with the overall result. Smooth sound with plenty of control and connectivity.
Network extension to the receiver can be easily achieved if you have a spare mains socket nearby. I used a TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT which has the added benefit of two ethernet ports, one for the receiver and one for a Roku 3 streaming device. I've always found wired to be better than wireless for streaming BBC i-player, Netflix, NOW, etc
