Book Description

31 May 2002 Ceramics
When he went to West Africa in the 1940s, Michael Cardew found himself 'in a land where the potter's art had been flourishing for centuries without the use of wheels, or kilns, or glazes'. This book grew out of his desire to share all that he had learned from the African pioneers of pottery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspirational 19 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
Michael Cardew's Pioneer Pottery is a much loved book that combines the emotional and scientific sides of pottery.

After an accurate account of the chemistry and geological processes behind clay and glazes, the author describes how he applied these ideas in a practical way after WW2 where he set up a stoneware pottery in the Nigerial town of Abudja.

All the practical aspects of making, decorating and firing are covered. Cardew even tells us how to find and process our own clays, make house bricks, fire bricks and refractories. Though I suspect most of us will be buying these from the pottery supplier, it is enlightening to learn how a "pioneer" achieves these things.

The book is completed by a thoughtful essay on the role of the potter craftsman in modern society.

A "must" in any pottery library.

Had to write about Micheal Cardew in my CEramics degree and this is a very useful and informative book. Plenty of pictures and writing. All very interesting if you are learning about ceramics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for students of the art 6 Aug 2002
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
First published 33 years ago by Michael Cardew, a respected expert in British ceramics, Pioneer Pottery is a superbly presented and classic work enhanced with excellent black/white illustrations and photography (including a new color section of previously unshown works), and a new introduction by the author's son. An extremely solid reference to the art of pottery, from the chemical composition of pottery clay to sculpting, firing, and painting, Pioneer Pottery is a first-rate guide and is strongly recommended reading for students of the art, history, and joy of pottery.
