Amazon.co.uk Review
Pioneer has managed to pack an awful lot into its DV-545 DVD player, which is just a little over two inches high. It's a mid-range player and as such has to offer something a bit special over the many run-of-the-mill players on offer. This sleek player manages that task with its high-class pictures and sound.
At its heart is a high-performance 24-bit/192KHz DAC that translates into a highly detailed and accurate picture. It is particularly good at picking out subtle details and you don't lose anything to murky shadows due to lack of contrast. Fast moving images remain clear and unfazed too. It will auto-switch from PAL to NTSC as required.
Pioneer has used electronics borrowed from its hi-fi range to equip the 545 with classy sound too. You get Pioneer's renowned Legato Link system to add detail to the high frequency sounds that can be lost on CDs. Working on the low frequencies is Pioneer's Hi-Bit system. The result is lots of rich detail making the 545 a highly capable CD player in its own right.
Most of the controls are on the remote control, which boasts a nifty set of back-lit buttons. There is a rotary jog/shuttle control and a joystick cursor control which reduces the annoying games of "hunt the button". The set-up procedure includes a handy automatic optimising mode to set things up for you. For the more adventurous there is a slew of expert settings, including a comprehensive set of sound and picture optimisation modes.
On the back are a full set of connectors including two RGB SCARTs, composite video and both optical and coaxial digital outputs. It'll cope with a wide array of disc formats including MP3, CD-RW, DVD-R and VCD.
There is no Dolby Digital decoder built in but it will pass the digital signal to an external decoder via the digital outputs. The player does feature the SRS TruSurround system that tries to emulate the effect of surround sound with just two speakers. These minor niggles aside the Pioneer DV-545 makes an outstanding DVD player and an ideal component in a decent home cinema system--those extra capabilities and the high performance are well worth the additional outlay. --Miles Berkeley
