Product Description

Product Description

Need a powerful drive? Already have software? Then the BDR-207DBK is the drive for you. The BDR-207DBK drive is perfect for system builders, for those looking to upgrade to a Blu-ray burner, or for those who already have software. The BDR-207DBK is an internal SATA drive. It can burn up to 12x on BD-R (25GB) and BD-R dual layer (50GB) media, which is the fastest write speed available! The drive is also backwards compatible, so it can read and write to most DVD and CD formats. Click on the "Specifications" tab to see all supported media formats, as well as the read and write speeds achievable. Want to watch Blu-ray 3D titles? Well the BDR-207DBK drive is 3D capable. All you need is 3D playback software and a 3D display system and you're ready to go. Running out of hard drive space? Afraid of losing your valuable files when your hard drive crashes? With Blu-ray BD-R dual layer (DL) discs, you can store the equivalent of 10 single layer DVDs. Now you can have a backup you can trust and with as few discs as possible. The BDR-207DBK drive has features such as a QuickStart which enables the disc to be ready 42% faster, a Noise Suppression design to minimize noise, an Anti-Dust design to increase durability, and Precision Writing Technology to minimize write errors. And of course being a Pioneer drive, the BDR-207DBK drive supports a wide range of blank media. Faster burning First in the industry to realize 12x writing on BD-R discs, Pioneer can now achieve 12x writing on BD-R Dual Layer (DL) discs. Watch 3D movies The drive is 3D capable. All you need is 3D playback software and a 3D display system. Get to your files faster The amount of time between inserting a disc, and that disc being ready has been reduced by 42%. A quieter drive With our redesigned disc tray structure, the airflow in our drives is smoothed and operational noise reduced. Enhancements such as tunnel-like air intakes and ducts, plus a smoother interior to the drive suppress noise and provide a quieter experience. Increased life expectancy The sound barrier design that traps noise inside the drive also works to keep dust outside the drive. This makes the drive much more dust resistant than previous models and drive failure due to dust is practically nonexistent. Wide blank media support Pioneer strives to have best in class performance over a wide range of media – our drives achieve this for a large variety of BD and DVD media. Refer to the drive’s media support list for all supported media and the write speed that can be achieved. Top quality writing Our chassis' design maximizes disc stability and write quality by reducing warping at high speed caused by disc vibration, especially on the outer areas of the disc.

After installation on a Linux PC, I tried to write to a TDK BD-RE disk using growisofs but when trying to read it back the drive would see it as an empty disk. Worse still, the disk could not then be rewritten as it thought that the disk was read only and was now useless. The drive firmware version was 1.21 which according to the US Pioneer support site was the latest but on the Japan Pioneer support site a version 1.30 was available.

After updating to 1.30 I inserted the BD-RE which I had used before and it could now be mounted and read correctly meaning that the previous write was probably ok but I am not relying on it and neither should you. Now I can write data to BD-RE and read it back without problems.

For information the TDK BD-RE disks, which were bought at the same time, are these
TDK T19798 BD-RE 1x-2x 25GB Blu-ray Disc - 5 Pack Jewel Case
and they have a Media ID of 'PHILIP/W02' meaning that they are really made by Philips.
Please note that this media is in the list of approved media for the old 1.21 firmware so it seems that Pioneer didn't test it properly at the time.

I was on the market for a blu-ray writer and in the end I decided for this model despite being capable of burning disc "only" up to 50GB. My decision was driven by the fact that a cake of 100GB or 50GB blank blu-ray cost as much or even more than the drive itself and, unless you are in need of burning 100GB of data in 1 session, that would defeat the purpose of "spotting the bargain".
I've burned a couple of discs and so far so good: easy to install, updated firmware, and burned 25GB of data in no time using a free software (CDBurnerXP - Works on Windows 7/8).
Happy days!

Well, this is an "OEM edition", meaning it's the drive itself, no bundled software/no fancy packing etc. But if you know what you need and already have burning software - this is an excellent purchase. Speedy, reliable, silent, and also "future proof" to certain extent: everything you could expect for this money. In my humble opinion, - far better than other OEM offerings (SONY-NEC, and endless series of LiteOns and Samsungs) Sofar not a single coaster burnt, good product !

I like Pioneer burners. I've used a few in the past & they've been very reliable giving good quality burns so I expect this to do the same.

I replaced my Mac Pro's internal DVD drive with this unit [207D]. I chose this device as I wanted to move away from the limited capacity of DVD-Rs. I needed a format that would be future-proof and reliable - Apple's constant updating of IO ports [FW 400 / 800 / USB 2/3 / PCI / Thunderbolt / etc etc] has made me wary of buying a high-capacity backup device that would become obsolete within a few years. BluRay appears to be one of the best options for safe long-term storage.

As you may know, Apple do not directly support the BluRay format [as at: Nov2012] so OS X does not 'see' or work with the drive. However, I have found that the latest versions of Roxio's Toast app works fine with the unit. I have installed it in my 2010 MacPro [OS X Lion] - installation is very easy [just remove the caddy from inside of the Mac Pro and connect 2 wires] - the blu ray could be installed in the spare drive slot on the Mac Pro - however I had already used this for an SSD.

The only problem I have encountered is a few discs failing during the writing process - when this happens the system will not eject the failed disc, so I have to turn off the mac & put a paperclip into the front port on the drive to manually push the drive tray out. Bit of a hassle - but as I say its only happened twice in 6 months of operation.

so far I have only used the TDK-branded 25GB discs.
