If you haven't caught up with these episodes on BBC THREE this DVD is coming out nice and handy, but after all the things that have set back the show in the last few series, is Series 9 worth it?
I would on balance say yes, if only to see how the show copes with the loss of 2 more of its most major characters, stick this on and you will be wondering where the hell is Louise and Janet? Well they're not in it, the show has basically become the Gaz & Donna show. It's hard to believe really because although they were a very strong part of the original group of friends if you'd been asked back in Series 1 or 2 to name a central character you probably would have said Janet or Jonny, they were STRONG characters. So are Gaz & Donna however so kudos to the creators for keeping the show going focusing only around their struggles, but to stop them from having to fill the entire episodes on their own, two new characters have been dropped in out of nowhere and we see a heck of a lot more of Tim, the gay bar man, in fact it's unsurprising really given the circumstances but he even gets a bit of a storyline. Gaz is disabled and resents his Scouse male nurse carer, Tim the barman is given an obnoxious sister who is as rough and ready as the town of Runcorn herself. These new characters can't hope to provide the level of entertainment the original ones did and they do feel a bit plasticky and 2d but at least their stories develop a bit towards the end. I did find the series a bit lonely and desolate with so many of the main characters gone, but if you were dumped by your mates in Runcorn so would you. Without giving too much away the ending certainly didn't leave things on a high but it did demonstrate the depth the series can sometimes get to with its main characters, even though the show is mainly a pantomime of one liners. The ending alone makes me hope that they'll find some reason to bring it back for Series 10, I think it all deserves to be wrapped up with a fun ending on a high, if Series 9 does become the end of the whole thing then it has just ended up withering and dying.

I didnt watch this series when it was shown on BBC 3,I had seen the trailers and to be honest it seemed to be a shadow of its former self, and a series too far.And Ill be honest when I bought it I only really did so because I had all the other series and felt I should keep a complete set.But when I finally got around to watching it,I must admit I was pleasantly surprised.

Donna and Gaz are now the center of the show, and are pretty able to carry each episode, thanks to the performances of Natalie Casey and Will Mellor, though it has to be said the departure of Janet and Louise has left a pretty big hole at the shows core.Their replacements,Cassie and Billy, while ok.didnt exactly win me over, but I found them less annoying by the final episode. The big surprise for me was the character of Tim,who I had never particularly warmed to in the past,Luke Gells performance was far better in this series for some reason, and he made Tim funny this time out, rather than irratating.

I didnt think I would like this series, and it won me over,it made me laugh, outloud on a good few occasions as well, and that is the whole point of a comedy show. What else can you judge it on.Its not the force it once was,but I do think there is life left in the show yet,it may only be for one more series, but its still there. To lose half your regular cast, and come back with a ninth series that can still make you laugh, proves its still doing something right.

NOT 2 pints 26 Sep 2011
Format:DVD
no jonny, no louise, no janet, no wesley, no corintian, no good! only gaz and donna are here, and gaz is in a wheelchair, which is a daft plot and terrible. terrible series with only 2 or 3 good moments. if you like 2 pints... DO NOT WATCH!

The "aftermath" specials are included on this DVD, but narratively they belong with series 8. As such, they're rubbish (probably even worse than the main series 8). Read more

Two pints
Great addition to my collection, new characters but still hilarious, shame it appears to be the last series. Will be sadly missed.
