I didnt watch this series when it was shown on BBC 3,I had seen the trailers and to be honest it seemed to be a shadow of its former self, and a series too far.And Ill be honest when I bought it I only really did so because I had all the other series and felt I should keep a complete set.But when I finally got around to watching it,I must admit I was pleasantly surprised.
Donna and Gaz are now the center of the show, and are pretty able to carry each episode, thanks to the performances of Natalie Casey and Will Mellor, though it has to be said the departure of Janet and Louise has left a pretty big hole at the shows core.Their replacements,Cassie and Billy, while ok.didnt exactly win me over, but I found them less annoying by the final episode. The big surprise for me was the character of Tim,who I had never particularly warmed to in the past,Luke Gells performance was far better in this series for some reason, and he made Tim funny this time out, rather than irratating.
I didnt think I would like this series, and it won me over,it made me laugh, outloud on a good few occasions as well, and that is the whole point of a comedy show. What else can you judge it on.Its not the force it once was,but I do think there is life left in the show yet,it may only be for one more series, but its still there. To lose half your regular cast, and come back with a ninth series that can still make you laugh, proves its still doing something right.
